The drafters and supporters of the 1,990-page health care restructuring bill released by Nancy Pelosi this morning really don't understand how business works.
I've had only a few minutes to look at the bill, but one fundamental and profound stupidity jumped out at me.
The bill defines which businesses are subject to the health care tax based upon the dollar amount of employee payroll. There even is a sliding scale right in the bill (section 501, at page 276) which tops out at 8% for businesses with $750,000 of annual payroll. Annual payroll is defined as the "aggregate wages" paid by the employer.
This provision creates incentives for businesses to keep down payroll. One way would be not to hire anyone whose compensation would fall under the definition of payroll under the bill.
In other words, outsource whatever you can. Hire a software engineer in India, or ship manufacturing to China, or structure your business in such a way that you send 1099s not W-2s to the people who work for you (and hire an accountant and tax lawyer to navigate IRS rules on independent contractors).
The message of the bill is that whatever you do, if you want to grow your business without paying the health care tax, do not add employees.
Obama does not understand these provisions. Obama gave a speech this morning in which he stated that these provisions are directed at small businesses operating on thin margins. But these provisions have nothing to do with profit margins. This is a wage-based tax.
Obama does not understand the difference between profit margins and wages. This is exactly what you would expect from someone who always has been on the receiving end of wages, and never had to meet a payroll. Wages are not profits and have nothing to do with the success of a business. Just ask the auto companies.
I don't think Obama and the other Democrats are lying about this aspect of the health care tax. They truly do not understand how the private economy works. In their blissful ignorance they are designing job-killings provisions which they do not understand.
It is not an overstatement to say "be afraid, be very afraid" of this monstrosity

The purpose of health care is to turn America into Britain politically, where every election is about health care from now on. All the arguments and political ads will be about wait times, benefits, efficiency, and cost. Demoocrats will always win majorities since they can make the biggest promises with a straight face. In Britian, 5% of the voters are in the health care union and they control nearly every election. Republicans will win a few seats if they act just like Democrats.
The media will hold sway over the people even more by blasting the deplorable conditions of the health care system if Conservatives are in charge, while ignoring those same conditions when liberals are in charge. Either way, the "good" big government liberal people will be in charge permanently and that is "America as it should be." I can't remember who said it, (one of the lady conservative commentators) but if this passes and is allowed to go into action by the courts, it is GAME OVER for the USA as we know it.
The problem with liberal Democrats is that they only have ONE core value, and that is that they want to be in charge. Everything else in the world is secondary to that.
Just GAME OVER for the USA. No "as we know it" needed. We will no longer be able to support the number one military on Earth. The Pax Americana will soon be over and warfare around the globe will get to be a very serious matter, increasing in intensity until some other nation, probably China, takes over what America had been.
Is this the one where we get five years of coverage with ten years to pay for it? What happens after that? This thing is a _______ disaster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m guessing the “Total Dead In Iraq” daily counter with President Bush in office compared to a page 2 story about another IED death in Afghanistan is proof enough of that.
The Republicans would be just as happy to get some of the political power. VERY FEW members of Congress would stand in the way of passing this immoral and financially disastrous bill. Why do you think Bob Dole is partnering with Tom Daschle to support this behemoth?
Wages are not profits and have nothing to do with the success of a business? Nothing?

Obama most certainly understands these provisions. What Obama and these dems are trying to do is purposely destroy our economy. This HC bill is a directly engineered to change America and our way of life. This is pure gov't control of every aspect of our lives.
I loathe these peoples political philosophies! They are a direct contradiction of liberty and freedom.

Destroy the economy by the sheer weight of the demands placed on it, authorized by the policies and legislation of the ruling elite in DC. Collapse the system under its own weight.
It is time to take back the country.
Pelosi hates businesses and people who work hard honestly all their lives, and wants to take their money and give it to people who vote democrat.
Basically to take total control of every state and its people.
