Bear Hug (Great Pictures)
The Great White Hunter ^ | 1/29/10 | Ryan Benson

In these series of photos, you will see a polar bear come upon some sled dogs tethered to a steak. Normally you would think that a dog tethered to a steak would be lunch for a polar bear, but these pictures tell a completely different story. From what I can see, the polar bear just wanted to play and get a little brotherly love. The professional photographer who took these photos said, the bear came back every night that week to play with the dogs. Excellent photos, taken by Norbert Rosing when he was in the wilds around Canada’s Hudson Bay.

There are a few more images here the

If we could stake out OBAMA next to the Polar Bear, I don’t think there would be BARRY much left of him!

You're such a good sport we'll have to buy you an ice cold bear to go with your stake. No need to choose between dark or light.

You're right, but there wouldn't be enough for dinner. The Bear would have just dessert.

These pictures were shot because a photographer wanted some sunset photos of a dog sled. Set it up with a local, when he arrived for the session, so did the bear. I saw the full set. Amazing stuff. In the story, he said the local told him the bear returned every evening for two weeks to play with the dog.

If they take you out for a stake and invite you to "tie one on," do respectfully decline. *\;-)

How did you know I was going there? This crowd is always one step ahead! heh

Not really, the dogs and the bear’s body language are both soft and playful. The bear’s eyes and face are not in attack mode. The dogs are not showing fangs in the first picture.

What cute pics, Sassy will love them. I don’t know where the photographer was.

Curious, that polar bears in zoos almost always attack humans that invade their exhibits but a wild polar bear is so playful towards these dogs.

Polar bears do seem to be less aggressive albeit more powerful than other bears.

Of course, I also don't hear about other types of bears attacking dogs outright unless they are protecting humans.

Perhaps it has to do with humans walking upright that actually appears to be the aggressive stance to a bear.

I’ve read that predators are generally pretty cowardly, because they know by instinct that they have to be able to take down prey and not get injured themselves - obviously, they can’t go to the doctor. In the wild, even a small wound can get infected and result in death. I’ve seen this behavior on a smaller scale with my dogs at a dog park. No dog, regardless of size or aggressiveness, will bother my three 30 pound Corgi’s - because that dog knows by instinct that it can’t fight three of anything and get out of it unscathed. This didn’t work when I had only two, so maybe three is a magic number, maybe a “pack”.

Strangely, I just came upon a similiar story that involved cheetahs and a baby impala. Maybe global warming is making the animal kingdom play nice? LOL
