"This stammer got me a home in Beverly Hills...
I'm not about to screw with it now!"

Bob Newhart (Oak Park, Illinois 9.25.1929) is an American comedian, author, and TV/film actor known for a deadpan style and trademark stammering and hesitant delivery. His hugely successful career spans over four decades, and the man is nothing less than an American comedy legend...

Bob Newhart's career was launched by his 1960 comedy album The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart -which acutally went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains to this day the 20th best-selling LP of any kind... in history.

Not only did he release an additional ten comedy albums over the next three decades, but Bob Newhart evolved into a huge star with four different TV series, various appearances in films and other television shows.

In college we got together to watch the 1980s Bob Newhart series "Newhart" every Tuesday night, where Bob plays a Vermont innkeeper of "Larry, Darrell, and Darrell" fame- always loved that show.

And here we have a vintage stand up bit of his on
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1969...

Oh, I disagree. They were both funny. Although I must admit, Larry and Darryl and Darryl were fantastic.

Bob Newhart's comedy was so sweet and wonderful.

I remember his record with a section called “The Driving Instructor”.

Me too -- it's as funny today as it was the first time I heard it.

I didn’t get a lot of the comedy when I was a kid but these folks are hilarious. I think my personal favorite is Tim Conway wandering off script.

Totally agree...best ending ever.

I recently saw Bob Newhart on an NCIS episode...he played a retired Dr. w/Alzheimers.

My favorite was a skit he did on SNL interviewing a potentially disgruntled employee at the postal service. The script is here: SNL transcripts

Back in 1972 I was at The Basic School, Quantico (TBS teaches new 2nd Lieutenants to lead a Marine Rifle Platoon).

At the start of our first Tactics class, the lead instructor, Maj Porter, walks to the podium wearing a trench coat and German helmet with a mortar shell sticking through it. “Vee hav vays uf teeeching you TAKTIKSsss”!

He then proceeded to introduce his two assistant instructors. Capt. Storm was a dead ringer for Tim Conway, only he did a better “Tim Conway” impression than Tim Conway. For young Marine lieutenants, Tactics is what it’s all about! With these guys teaching we loved the class.

Oh, Maj Porter introduced the third instructor, kind of dark and brooding at first, like Ralph Nader. “Class, this is our other Instructor, Capt. North, Capt Ollie North.” The three of them made the best ever “tag team” tactics instructors!

Those were the days, my friend!

A true comedy genius. And, unlike some of the alleged comedians of today, no sex or bad language.

I had picked up the Bob Newhart show on DVD last year or so. I had never realized before watching those shows with my wife just what a dramatic influence the show had on me growing up. But glancing over at my brunette, modestly proportioned, smarter than me wife I was forced to thank Bob a bit. She then bought me a-z bookends like he had in his office for my birthday.
