Several readers alerted us to a forum thread at Survivalist Boards that centered around an individual named Selco who spent several years in a city setting during the complete collapse of Bosnia circa 1992. Selco describes the experiences and the survival strategies that he, his family and his community used to stay alive. Many forum members chimed in on the conversation and asked questions of Selco, who took the time to provide vivid details to an interested survival community.

The following compendium of the most popular questions and answers from the forum thread has been provided by Chris Kitze of well known alternative media web site Before It’s News. It’s a long read, but well worth your time.

50 lbs of Homai rice runs around $25 here. Do prices at Costco vary that much regionally?

I’m trying to find a way to prepare it for long-term storage that doesn’t double the price. Ditto beans, oatmeal, yeast, and flour.

Rice is easy, mix in some DE powder and a O2 absorber. then seal. Same for beans.

Oatmeal and flour will only last a couple years but the same method as above can be used. yeast is a living organism, so keep it cool dark place. Even then it only lasts a couple years.

It’s the sealing part that I’m wondering about. Some people are talking about using mylar bags inside plastic buckets, which sounds...spendy.

I used mylar bags inside recycled plastic buckets. The mylar provides the seal to keep out the oxygen, and the plastic bucket makes it easier to stack and keeps out most insects/rodents. The plastic doesn’t provide anything besides physical protection.

The new buckets are kinda pricy, so I used ones from a bakery.

What kind of dessicant and O2 absorbant do you use?

I bought them from Pleasanthill grain. Pretty much the best prices that I’ve found and the quality has always been good.
