It was very much unavoidable. As of right now, people in Cyprus are hungry for hard cash. For paying in gas stations, even groceries, suppliers want cash. Milk and medicine for your child? Cash only.

And every branch of our gov’t and most big corporations are pushing for a cashless society here.
I don’t think so.

That's assuming, to be sure, cash still has value. What if it suddenly doesn't?
To: Standing Wolf
Haven’t see that. Even in Bosnian Selco tells that cash was good at first, later only barter work and gold pretty much got you killed.

Good ping, Kart.
I have to confess I am rather dependent on the “please-machine-money” card for almost everything. It’s a tough convenience habit to break.

Cash
is King!
Make sure the cash you keep on hand isn't just large bills...
Set your self up like you're going to have a yard sale. Lots of twenties, fives, ones, and rolls of change.
Hundred dollar bills are great, but in a situation like the one many of us see, it's better to haggle for a price and be able to pay out on the spot without expecting them to have exact change!
Get Ready folks!
To: JDoutrider
Yeah you need the change because if the power is out as well you will have to figure out the change or give them the exact amount.

One of the few people I have met with first hand experience of such a situation told me that liquor and cigarettes beat gold any day. Needless to say you have to be able to secure your inventory, being the wholesale supplier and having your customers help with security was one technique.
Put more bluntly, having some of the rougher locals working for you can enhance one's security.

One of the few people I have met with first hand experience of such a situation told me that liquor and cigarettes beat gold any day.I concur... been adding a jug every time I visit the Military commissaries, though I don't touch the stuff. Been doing that for a few years, could stock a big bar, or throw one helluva party with it all!
As far as tobacco as a trade item, we started stashing a few cans of "Top", "Bugle" and a few other brands before the big price jump. It too may prove to be a wise investment when the SHTF. Many smokers would kill to get a smoke when nothing is available... We be ready for that as well... LOL!
To: Kartographer
Possibly OT, but I had a chance to visit Georgia (the Caucasus one) several years ago. Converted our benniebux to the local currency and went out to see the sights.
There were little kiosks selling cigarettes, 1 liter bottles of beer, gum and the like every 50 feet, it seemed.
Bought a bottle and a pack of smokes that cost, say, 13 lari. Gave the girl a 20 lari bill and she gave me a pained expression that I knew meant "I don't have change". Winked at her and left. We won't have that luxury when it goes belly up here.
Bottom line, the OP is right. Keep plenty of small bills and change around if you can. Showing $100's may get you killed when the SHTF.

Top tobacky also comes with the rolling papers. As far as canning the products, both Top and Bugler comes in the large 6 ounce cans vacuumed packed. We just leave them unopened. When the time comes to parcel it out, that little trick you do is good advice to keep it fresh.
I can't believe how expensive (even in a commissary) that stuff has become. Back in '08 when we heard the taxes were going up 3 hundred per cent, I bought out 2 commissaries! Cost over one large, but, I knew it was going to go out of sight. Have procured some pipe tobacco and chew since then... It won't go to waste, I can assure you!

Cash would be necessary after an EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) event.

Seems cash is good while things are plentiful. Once most goods start running short your money becomes no good.
