The Populist Egghead - Sen. Ted Cruz is a rare political species
Slate ^ | October 25, 2013 | John Dickerson

Sen. Ted Cruz is a rare political species—a supposed man of the people who is attacked for his elite credentials and lack of common sense.

-----------------------

Sen. Ted Cruz may be the conservative movement's first populist egghead—a grassroots leader who is attacked for being too smart to have common sense. In political theater, you're usually allowed to wear only one of these costumes.

The populist claims to possess the horse sense of the electorate and has no need for fancy schools, with their eating clubs, trays of sherry, and debating societies. That was Sarah Palin's posture. It was also true of the men to whom Cruz has recently been unfavorably compared—Huey Long, Joe McCarthy, and George Wallace—and those conservative luminaries he aspires to join—Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan.

Cruz came to Washington as an anti-establishment bolt from the blue, having defeated the GOP’s preferred nominee in his first Senate race. In the recent Obamacare fight, he sharpened his populist credentials against the elites. After his bid to defund the Affordable Care Act failed, Cruz took to the microphones and aligned himself with the “millions of Americans” harmed by the president’s pet project—people who he claimed the GOP establishment had forsaken.

[HUGE SNIP]

For now, Cruz appeals to both the truck drivers and the Federalist Society. He heads to Iowa on Friday, where he will no doubt be greeted with a roar by activists who will travel hours just to see the populist egghead, a rare bird in the Republican menagerie.

Whatever, Slate.

Palen and Cruz are both way smarter than the Obamadork.

Still waiting to see those academic records, although watching the dork’s performance when the Dork’s tele-brain malfunctions is proof enough that he’s got the IQ of Walter Cronkite.

“Populist” means trailer park N-word in Left-speak.

“Still waiting to see those academic records”

high school, college, university transcripts...nothing exists. This clown should have F’s as even the dumbest moron knows how many states there are in the US.

Pick Sarah Palin as his VP. Cruz-Palin or Palin-Cruz. Me, I prefer the latter.

I think most of the media secretly know what the Senator is saying is true .. and after all, how many Congress people have received an 8 MINUTE and 15 MINUTE STANDING OVATION ..?? ZERO!

Most of the media and other Congress people are seething with envy and jealousy .. LET ‘EM. Who cares what they think.

Brains and common sense in one person .. who woulda thunk it possible ..????

It is things like this that has me convinced that our true model to fight from is the Protestant Reformation..we’re dealing with a click of self anointed priest contending that they are the only ones that know the truth and therefore must lead

it’s not just brains, and common sense.

It’s complete fearlessness, relentlessness and seemingly inexhaustible physical, spiritual and mental energy.

At the end of his 21 hour speech, he went straight on Rush, and a few other things before taking a little break.

phenomenal, really.

I totally agree about the “fearlessness”.

He’s saying to the repubs what they have needed to hear for years. I especially liked his statment about the “consultants” - throwing them all in the sea”.

Then, he went on to explain why .. and how it has hurt us to follow them. Then, he hit them with 2010 - and he explained why it was successful.

I can only hope a lot of repubs were paying attention.

And, a key to his fearlessness is the fact that he was a Champion Debater at Princeton and Harvard. This is also the reason he doesn’t need notes.

The first time I heard him speak, I was hooked. He is exactly the kind of person we need. The elites don’t like him .. and that’s why I like him all the more. He’s not afraid of them; he won’t bow to them if it goes against the American people.

I sure hope he’s planning on running in 2016.

wow! You make a very good point.

It is very similar. Actually, this was the very same fight Reagan had to fight .. all the elites were against him (they wanted Bush Sr.).

Actually, I’d like to see Mike Lee run as VP .. that way we have another fearless soul to follow Ted. I’d like to see Palin chosen for a cabinet post .. not sure which one, but any spot where there’s a mess (IRS) .. and just turn her loose to clean it up .. and she would too. When she got done with that bunch, he could appoint her to another group and let her clean up that(EPA). A lot of pink slips could be handed out .. and by the time Ted’s first term was over, there would be a well-oiled machine cranking up the economy.

There ya go .. we’re on the way UP, instead of down.
