Former President Jimmy Carter championed racial equality Tuesday evening, saying "there's no difference with people in the eyes of God" during a 50th anniversary celebration of the Civil Rights Act.
Carter, 89, hailed the landmark 1964 law that outlawed discrimination against minorities and women as a stepping stone, but insisted there's still more work to do.
"We're pretty much dormant now. We accept self-congratulations about the wonderful 50th anniversary which is wonderful but we feel like Lyndon Johnson did it and we don't have to do anything anymore," said Carter, the first president to speak at the three-day Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library Civil Rights Summit in Austin, Texas this week.
"There's still a gross disparity between black and white people on education and employment," he explained, citing black unemployment rates that exceed the national average. "A good amount of schools in the south are still segregated," he added.
Growing up in the once-segregated state of Georgia, the former president recalled being influenced by black culture and his push to end racial discrimination after he was elected governor of that state in 1970. But four decades later, the 39th president said racial inequality still disportionately affected African Americans.
He also touted his support for gay marriage and said he believes it will eventually be recognized in all states.
"I don't believe there's a difference between people because of their sexual orientation," said the devout Christian and longtime Baptist Sunday School teacher.
The three-day summit will feature Bill Clinton, who will speak Wednesday; President Obama is scheduled to give the keynote address Thursday and George W. Bush will wrap up as the event's final speaker.

Apparently a resounding "YES!"
Here's a very telling piece by a hard-core Leftist radical who dresses down a Liberal [who objected to their radicalism] on the state of black, feminist and gay anger.
If white liberals were playing offense rather than defense here, they might do the serious work of translating some of these concerns into policy solutions that actually improve the lives of people of color, queer people, people with disabilities, cis and trans women and all the intersections among these groups.
Screw you Carter

Shut up Jimmie, you’ve become an embarrassment to your brother Billy
There is no fool like an old fool. Jimmy Carter is obviously unaware that the Constitution gives ALL Americans civil rights. Not just blacks.
This is a credo of American justice with the words “Equal Justice Under Law” cut into the stone face of the Supreme Court Building.
The real civil rights issue today is the racist Obama Administration’s Attorney General, Eric “my people” Holders, racist enforcement of civil rights and hate crime laws.
Carter is not alone in ignoring this. To their shame cowardly Republicans ignore it too even though it would give them a winning moral and political issue if they would bring it up and stay on message when they are smeared as “racist” by the Corrupt Liberal Media and the Dims.
Holder was right about one thing, although in a way opposite of what he meant. We are a Nation of Cowards when talking about race and civil rights in this country.

Thanks Cincinatus’ Wife.
[snip] Although majorities in both parties voted for the bill, there were notable exceptions. Though he opposed forced segregation,[36] Republican Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona voted against the bill, remarking, “You can’t legislate morality.” Goldwater had supported previous attempts to pass civil rights legislation in 1957 and 1960 as well as the 24th Amendment outlawing the poll tax. He stated that the reason for his opposition to the 1964 bill was Title II, which in his opinion violated individual liberty and states’ rights. Most Democrats from the Southern states opposed the bill and led an unsuccessful 83-day filibuster, including Senators Albert Gore, Sr. (D-TN) and J. William Fulbright (D-AR), as well as Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, who personally filibustered for 14 hours straight. [/snip]
