Reparations Are Owed: Here are a few ways to pay the bill
Slate ^ | May 22, 2014 | Jamelle Bouie

A high school in Clinton, Tennessee, in December 1956. Reparations wouldn't just be about America's slaveholding era.

With “The Case for Reparations,” Ta-Nehisi Coates of the Atlantic sets slavery aside to focus on the long plunder of the 20th century, in which whites used coercion, violence, and government to exclude blacks from the bounty of American prosperity. The civil rights revolution of the 1960s was vital, but it wasn’t a panacea, and the problems of today—from the racial wealth gap to the crumbling ghettos of the Midwest—stem from the racist policies of our recent past. Or, as Coates puts it, “White supremacy is … a force so fundamental to America that it is difficult to imagine the country without it.”

This is more than rhetoric. Black families paid taxes and black soldiers fought for democracy in Europe and the Pacific, but—from low-interest home loans to money for education—they were barred from the benefits of the G.I. Bill. Indeed, the same federal dollars that built the suburbs were used to keep blacks out of them. It was the federal government that “pioneered the practice of redlining,” writes Coates, “selectively granting loans and insisting that any property it insured be covered by a restrictive covenant—a clause in the deed forbidding the sale of the property to anyone other than whites. Millions of dollars flowed from tax coffers into segregated white neighborhoods.” At the same time, “legislatures, mayors, civic associations, banks, and citizens all colluded to pin black people into ghettos, where they were overcrowded, overcharged, and undereducated.”(continued)

In simple practical terms, how do you ever get this operational?

Only white people pay? What about someone who’s half-white, do they pay a “half-share”? Quarter-race = quarter-share?

Similarly, who receives? If you’re half-black you get a half-share? etc.

So there’s gonna be government-administered tests for racial purity? That smacks of the Nazis.

This scheme is going nowhere except in the minds of black racists.

I think a fair question to ask is, “Who among you descendants of slaves would be better off in Africa if your ancestors were not enslaved in America?”

If you believe in migration theory, Blacks kicked my ancestors out of Africa. So maybe they owe me reparations.

Considering that almost every ethnic, tribal or national group of people in the world have, at one time or another, been slaves to another ethnic, tribal or national group ... what the hell is their particular problem?

We have been paying reparations since LBJ ... enough already.

The Jewish people have been slaves to more nations than any other group over the years, yet you don’t hear them bellyaching over reparations.

Mayhap if they got up off their welfare supplied couches busted their asses like everyone else, their problems would go away.

Rant off.

I’m descended from a 12 year old Londoner who was lured onto a ship and sold into indentured servitude, do I get reparations for that?

Those “dollars flowing into white neighborhoods” were not tax dollars, the VA home loans were from private funds but the mortgages were government-insured. This guy shows his moron at every turn.

Once they get their wish list totaled up, I’ll start on the minus column with every LBJ dollar since 1965. Bet the whiners end up owing everybody else...

At least the racist thieves are realizing the slavery dog won't hunt anymore.

This would tear apart the country.

Descendants of Union soldiers would have to pay?

Descendants of Europeans who arrived long after slavery ended would have to pay.

What about Asians or Latin Americans? Would they have to pay?

Government is not God and doesn’t have the knowledge or Wisdom to right all wrongs.

This is the underlying problem today. The left is trying to make Government God.

And those of us of Irish descent? Remember “No Irish allowed”? Or “No Irish need apply”?

since the Civil Rights Act, blacks have had privilege-hiring in government, state and local governments, sports leagues and private and corporate America. Same with enrollments in universities, where testing has been adjusted to allow for cultural differences and where tuitions are largely free to blacks due to the abundance of grants, as Coates, I’m sure, is well aware of. We have heard Coates diatribe before - in the 60’s. Some people just can’t move on - or rather, they’d rather blame white people for some black peoples’ inability to move on over the past 60 years to a life of accomplishments, thanks to the Dem party who profits in power most by keeping the black populace feeling victimized.

The only thing this IQ-of-85 tree-stump would be satisfied with is being given white slaves.

Then put it to a vote in Congress and see what happens

Maybe a civil war is what happens.

Reparations were paid in the form of blood and lives on a thousand battlefields from 1861-1865.

For every five blacks freed, one white soldier gave the ultimate sacrifice of his life, and many others lost arms and legs.

Yeah...anyone who is democrat pay these race card whores off—Republicans were the party that fought for minority rights, so they don’t owe anyone.

Next-—when are we going to have to pay women “reparations” for their “oppression”?

Next-—when are people gonna grow up?

Pretty soon, white males are gonna DESERVE reparations!

They’re CONSTANTLY being downtrodden, ridiculed, oppressed, insulted, disenfranchised, and THEY BUILT THIS COUNTRY.

Slavery has been a common condition for most of human history, among all races. Every race and culture has experienced it - it’s still around, especially in mohammedan dominated areas and in Africa. I myself am of Slavic descent - my ancestors were enslaved so often that that’s where the word comes from. If it weren’t for old white guys in England and the US that decided that slavery is too barbaric to be tolerated by civilized people, it would still be common everywhere. So no.

This might sound crude, but the best think that ever happened to blacks in the Americas was that their ancestors were brought over the ocean as slaves. The law of unintended consequences. Blacks in the Americas on average live far better lives than African blacks. There is no African Oprah unless it’s the wife of a typical, thieving black strongman.
