Conservatives say the U.S. has done enough to create equality for blacks. Young liberals agree.
The Washington Post's Wonk Blog ^ | July 1, 2014 | Emily Badger

One last dip into a big Pew survey we've been discussing about on the politics and policy views of Americans. Pew surveyed more than 10,000 adults earlier this year on topics ranging from their views of Hillary Rodham Clinton to taking the bus, and the report divides their responses along a set of political typologies that group respondents into generally coherent categories across the range of policy issues: i.e., the "business conservative," the "solid liberal," the young "next generation left."

Across that spectrum, there is not surprisingly wide disagreement on racial progress in America and the steps government still must take to achieve it. Most of the results on this chart are fairly predictable: Conservatives broadly believe that the government much done all it needs to to ensure equal rights for blacks. Liberals, with one striking exception, overwhelmingly disagree:

The views of young, affluent liberals stand out. In fact, they align more closely with conservatives than other liberal groups. So what's going on here? Are younger liberals so far removed from the Civil Rights era that they've become disconnected from the memory of overt discrimination it sought to end? Perhaps this cohort, which strongly supports gay marriage, believes that the front in the fight for equality has moved on to new beneficiaries?(continued)

It’s impossible to create equality. People don’t have equal abilities. Some are smarter and more talented than others.

This is a duh if ever there was one. All discrimination is illegal, billions if not trillions in preferences and benefits, people fear nothing more than being called “racist”, President and Attorney General are black, many thousands died in our bloodiest war to end slavery, the list goes on.

What is a “hard-pressed skeptic” or a “faith and family leftist”? Surveys tend to skew the way they are worded.

I don’t agree with the young liberals at all. we can do more. as the final leg on their liberal journey, they should now give up their job to the first dreamer they see.

I have been in military contracting for thirty plus years. I’ve known just two highly compensated black employees I’d actually hire to work for me. The others apparently felt it was enough that they were black. The others would suck a charge number dry and turn in either substandard work or no work. I proved that one guy on my government project was in the building about 30 hours a week, but he billed my project for 40 plus overtime. When I confronted him he told me he had family obligations. I told him his wife didn’t work and she could take the kids to the doctor. Everybody has family obligations and we somehow actually worked the hours we billed. He called me racist. I almost choked. I went to HR with my data and complained. I was told there was nothing they could do about it. I managed to get him off my project but then he was sucking off some other project. So, yes, we’ve overcompensated on blacks.

BTW, the reason there must be “highly compensated blacks” is the EOE comes in and audits. This particular guy was always the company’s “diversity” rep, as that was an overhead function. He asked me once if I wanted to be on the diversity council. He looked at my face and then he backed away choking with laughter. “Never mind.”

Not Surprising since it is the last couple of generations being told that grades just aren't good enough, you also have to be the 'right' color.

Businesses are telling them they are qualified, BUT they do enhance corporate diversity.

That they are the beneficiaries of White Privilege regardless of how hard they study or work.

The race card has been worn out.

People directly affected by slavery have been dead for 75 years.

People who were graduating high school when the Civil Rights act was passed are now in their 70s

America has spent over a Trillion dollars and 50 years of affirmative action in a good faith effort to better the lives of Black Americans.

Not one young person in their 20s has any responsibility for the past so why should they have to participate and be punished by the perpetual grievance culture of the Black community.

Enough is enough.

Equality, no. Equal rights, yes.

But Democfrats don’t want that. They want a permanent, dependent, expanding underclass, and one that is heavily minority. They view black people as porperty.

The sooner millennials and blacks understand this about Democrat.s, the sooner we’ll save the country

Plenty has been done to create jobs for blacks. The problem is that they’re being replaced in the workforce by hispanics, and this current influx will make that even worse.

And there’s yet another cycle.

I was down in SW Missouri visiting relatives and the Mexicans who worked the chicken processing plants have gone on welfare replaced by black Somalis.

Yes. That's a good thing. It's time for the professional black race baiters to cease their foul effort to perpetuate the cycle of past racism for a new generation.

Black males have never gotten into the workforce, for a variety of reasons. Black women do much better, and blacks not educated in the US (such as Jamaicans) do better overall.

Foreign-educated immigrant Hispanics can at least read Spanish and learn basic English and can do basic math, and they show up for work. Meanwhile, blacks and an increasing number of rural and small town whites are virtually illiterate and can’t even add and subtract, and are usually on welfare and spend much of their time staying stoned or using the substance of their choice. Somehow, there’s always money for that.

Most posters here have ignored the fact that the even the Army can’t find enough native-born Americans to pass its basic skills test.

The whole problem is the lousy American educational system, which was dumbed down on the theory that this would help blacks and then further dumbed down to accommodate the neuroses of middle class whites who were afraid that their Precious Pearl might actually have to compete and be found wanting. And, of course, dumbed down mainly by the teachers’ unions, which make their main job that of protecting teachers who can’t teach and schools where nobody can pass the Army skills test.

That’s what the problem is, not the raw materials.

Black Catholics, most of whom have gone through Catholic school, on the average earn more than white Catholics. They’re a self-selected group, so they tend to be smarter; but the problem is that most blacks and lower income whites go to public schools, which teach them absolutely nothing. Zip. Zero. Nada. This problem is entirely because of the teachers’ unions.

re: Mexicans replaced by black Somalis

It is a race to the bottom to find cheap labor. Somalis or just about anyone from a part of Africa with a Muslim or radicalized population is a real bad idea. Our leaders have got to know that the threat of ISIS-style violence coming into the US is very real.

What you write is too absolute. Although a lot of what you write has merit, such as the lack of work ethic spreading into the white population, there are blacks, boys and girls, who make all the right moves and do well.

What's needed to bring the work ethic back is to connect work with learning, starting at age 14 or so. Go back to shop classes and community projects. After that, connect government help with work. Everyone should have the opportunity for one healthy but basic meal a day, a shower, and a cot to sleep on. That's it. Everything else should be in exchange for doing something.

When I was in those schools, I could see the bad effect handouts had. Organizations would give the kids, for free, amazing things...book fairs with books to keep, high quality book bags filled with healthy food, clothing, amazing field trip opportunies. The kids didn't earn any of it. How are they ever going to see the connection between getting something and deserving it?

Another thing that makes my blood boil is all of those wonderful charitable enlightened elitists with their holiday meals. They provide the food, they cook the food, they take care of cleaning up, then they go back to their suburbs. How about providing the food, having the guests from the inner city cook and clean up, and sit down and eat with them? That would be enabling instead of patronizing.

Grrrr......the whole thing makes my blood boil.
