Confident, cautious Trump looks ahead to general election
DC Examiner ^ | 1/13/16 | Byron York

[snip]It can be risky for a candidate to get ahead of himself. In December 2011, Newt Gingrich, then riding high in the polls, told ABC News, "It's very hard not to look at the recent polls and think that the odds are very high I'm going to be the nominee." Needless to say, Gingrich did not become the nominee. Voters don't like a candidate who thinks he's got it in the bag. But Trump has been atop the Republican presidential race far longer than Gingrich was. And on board his 757 Tuesday, Trump mixed a sense of caution with a number of hints that he is thinking ahead to a general election.

We don’t like a candidate that thinks they have it in the bag.

Some of us don’t like loud mouthed philandering strip club owners from New York either.

would you prefer to have the crazy old socialist or the cackling liberal hag and her philandering first husband back in the whitehouse?

There’s visible hope in Trumps message. Everybody else, perhaps save for Cruz will be more of the same same.

Excellent counter from Cruz viz-a-viz why are the Democrats supporting Trump? A strong enough foil to counter Trumps ingenious float the birth issue for Cruz to defend.

This GOP nomination is Epic. God bless them both.

Meanwhile, the Hillary investigations will be the real test for Democracy. Will the FBI live up to it’s perceived reputation carefully groomed during the 70’s and 80’s or has it died, dried and sucked up into the big political ball of BS.

It’s a good interview. Trump is cautious but optimistic. But he’s not saying the nomination is in the bag at all.

Neither. That’s why I won’t vote for either.

“We don’t like a candidate that thinks they have it in the bag.”

That’s a problem with this country. Confidence is seen as a negative. We continue to embrace mediocrity while graciously accepting our participation trophies as other nations and leaders proudly boast of their accomplishments.

Sorry that Trump is too high-energy for you. People need some enthusiasm and confidence after 7 years of doom and gloom.

Keep in mind...IF Cletus wins the PowerBall tonight, I will immediately file for the Pubbie POTUS Campaign and challenge Trump to a “war of words”!

Maybe HBO will pick it up as a reality contest?

I like high energy. I don’t like listening to a New York ADHD stream of consciousness blowhard, incessantly babbling about how great he is.

Bragging is not confidence, it is evidence of a lack of confidence, or simple narcissism.

It’s because that is what is taught in school. My questions are why is it only bad when republican politicians are confident, and why do only republican politicians believe that?

I really prefer a meek, quivering, milquetoast kind of candidate.

/said no one, ever.

[Bragging is not confidence, it is evidence of a lack of confidence, or simple narcissism.]

So if you boast and brag to friends that your kid made the honor roll, or was accepted into a prestigious university, you lack confidence and are being a narcissist?

That’s basically what you are implying.

"They are very strong positions," Trump said. "It doesn't mean you're not going to negotiate a little bit, but I guess there will always be some negotiation. But they are very strong positions. And I would adhere to those positions very strongly.

So what does that mean? Mexico pays for some of the wall but not all? A complete and total ban on Muslims except for those in category X, Y, and Z? Illegal immigrants are deported except for those working on Trump properties?

No, confidence is not bad or bragging, but how you express it matters. This is not an expression of confidence:

“My kid is great. I’m great. Did you know I went to Wharton? I’m a very good student, I’ve always been a good student, oh, and let me say this, when I am President, everyone will be great... and smart. Or we will... and that’s another thing - can you believe someone from Cuba is evangel... everyone knows I’m Presbyterian. Greatest religion evah... can’t say that about... and that clown from... of course everyone knows that being rich is a really good thing, I mean how many poor people are really happy? They sure aren’t great. I’m great. My kid is great. And by the way, he just made the honor roll. He is great. Smartest evah. And we are doing very well in Iowa, and across the country...”

So when you are applying for a job (POTUS candidacy is basically an interview), do you not tell the person who will make the decision to hire you that you will do a great job for them? That hiring you would be a benefit to their company?

If you are trying to close a sale, do you not tell the potential customer how great your product or brand is compared to the competition? Do you not tell them the faults the competitor’s product has compared to yours?

It’s sad that you hold self-confidence and a can-do attitude in such disdain. Those were among the attributes that used to make us a great nation. Now the nation is in decline.

All three examples would be fantastic victories.

First, I would being coherent is important. Next, there are ways to speak positively without sounding like a New York jerk.

Incoherence is tough to listen to, but what I distain is New York City bragging.

I am an A type. All the people I work with are A types. Working on a team with highly successful and driven people, who exude confidence in everything they do, makes calling what the New York blowhard does “confidence” hard to swallow.

If you know anyone in elite groups in the military, you will know what I mean. If someone came in with Trump’s swagger, they would soon have their knees cut out from underneath them.

Confidence is what you do - not what you bragging about you would like to do.
