I am, ah, mostly joking about the men supposed to hate cats thing.
Truth be told, I’ve always loved the cat. I ‘ve had a cat since I was 16, and I’ve had to put a number of them to sleep between then and now when I’m 44.
Every time that happens, I always lose my composure, and most of those times it’s in front of a female who is the vet putting them to sleep.
They don’t cry, I cry. How embarrassing!
That’s when I tell them in my blubbering voice that I don’t even like cats, and they chuckle in a good natured way knowing that I am full of it.
“German shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia, too.”
I wonder if the shortened spine might actually help with dysplasia? My thinking is that with a shorter spine, perhaps the little guys hips don’t have to support as much weight, less body.
Someone should notify Victor Hugo that Quasimodo is a Disney character.
“I guess itâs a terrible time of year for it, but chrisinoc- do y’all have any kind of a âârailroadââ situation for transport?”
Our rescue does not normally do out of state rescues or adopt out of southern CA. We did bring in a two dogs from Michigan recently because another rescue could not arrange transport to Maryland. They were flown in from Chicago to John Wayne as we always do non stop flights so they spend less time in transit.
And:
Someone and I picked up three German shepherds from a Pahrump NV rescue two weeks because they had way too many German shepherds. It was a 550 mile round trip but we did it in 9 hours.
that’s sad.
I dont even want to think about my buddy, who’s 7, facing that.
I’m 47. Middle aged FReepers :)
Someone gave me a year old German Shepherd a few months ago. I call her Houdini because she’s a great escape artist. She can fit through a 10”x12” window. She can stretch her back legs straight behind her. I’ve never seen a dog do that. Someone told me that she’s double jointed.
God Bless us!
Yes!
They are prone to arthritis, too.

At least they know some preventive measures and good diagnosis, didn't read far enough to find out much about treatment, assume the longer it's let go or not diagnosed, the harder to treat.
I understand & strongly agree. chris37- being familiar & all. . .
aarrgghh I HATE flying dogs & have only helped someone do it once. They were MUCH calmer about it than I was. Pilots for Paws puts the crate in the cockpit, which isn’t nearly as bad as cargo. (Actually, I hate flying, period, & have only flown once- just so I could say I had)
OOF But you’re lucky to be in Cali & spoiled. It’s over 600+ miles RT from my house to the Bay Area in Houston & I used to drive that every week, sometimes a couple of times a week. Sometimes, I miss it. It isn’t bad except in bad weather.
There used to be a lady here who did the long hauls. She lived in Beaumont- or around there & would go up to DFW, pick up a bunch of dogs & then make her way back home down I35 & back through Houston to home. That’s a really LONG trip. She was about the same age. I’m not sure I could have done it.
Our rescue does not normally bring in German shepherds from out of state because on the average there are 125 GSDs on a given day that need to be rescued or adopted in southern CA alone. Between five GSD rescues only half are saved, the rest killed.
Westside GSR of Los Angeles does out of state adoptions. Transportation cost averages $1500 per dog.

“So ah, yeah, I only pet the cat when no one is looking.”
Don’t worry, real men love cats.

Still have to keeps these things under wraps, you know, appearances and such, ahem, only the vet gets to know how I really feel about cats. I didn’t say that.
That’s true- at least with Eskies, here, too.
That is terrible. I know the Eskie rescuers get a little panicky when one winds up in certain shelters there. I’m on the national list but haven’t kept up with it in several years.
I’m surprised California isn’t more successful with no-kill.
That’s crazy. Everyone here, that I know of, seeks donations from the sending &/ or receiving rescues & that’s it. Usually, it’s just whatever it takes to get them out of the shelter. Less than or at most, $100. Unless S/N is involved.
Those dogs are beautiful, makes me sad to see potential friends like that without families to love them.
Isn’t that the kid on The Middle?
