If you kill a king, expect swift retribution. Expect avengers. Expect to not live long after you deal the final fatal blow to a royal personage. A boy, Pierre Basile, was executed on this date in 1199 for shooting King Richard the Lionhearted* with an arrow expelled from his crossbow.

King Richard died on this date in 1199. According to the Wikipedia article, there are different versions of who it was who killed him—one version has Pierre Basile killing him out of revenge (because the king had killed his father and two brothers) and the king letting the boy go. Wikipedia also casts doubt on the hypothesis that Richard was a homosexual so Pierre’s motive presumably wasn’t homophobia. (Richard was married but had no children by his wife—but at least one illegitimate child.)

At the link

The wound wasn’t fatal to Richard I; the gangrene was.

BS. He died from Corona Virus or CCP-19

Back before history got Woke, I was taught in an upper level history course that Richard stayed on the crusades because he preferred Arab boys to English maidens.

He spent very little time in England during his 10 year reign. Apparently he did force himself on some unwilling French maidens.

Coming back from the Crusades, he was held for ransom in Austria. Probably by a direct ancestor of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I guess this was after Richard went to Nottingham, set things right and made Robin Hood an Earl. :-))
