Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.

Our FreeRepublic team of 325+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 108th place (with 991 active CPUs - 34,150 completed Work Units and more than 6,000,000 points).

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 16 folding threads)

I hope this isn't a silly question but...I just installed the software on both my home machines. If I use the same user name (my FR screen name) and team # on both PCs, will the project aggregate the completed work units from both computers and give a single ranking to that user name? Does the same user name on two computers cause any problems with the software?

You can use the same name on multiple machines. Set it all up and let er rip!

Welcome to the team!

Yes, you can have as many computers folding under the same username as you want. Fortunately for us, Klutz has 369 of them folding for the same username/team. Many others have more than 1 computer folding.

See you on the stats pages.

A warm WELCOME and THANK YOU, to all the new members ! Once you get settled into the folding life, remember to check out Egon's monitoring tool. You'll find it easier to keep track of what your machine(s) are doing.

Thanks....and I'll be hanging out, eventually, I'll figure out what the points are about,
(when I roll my cursor over the icon it says "8250/12500")
but for right now....I'm enjoying being part of the team. My sister died of CF when she was 13 (I was 18), so this is an easy squeeze for me!

You need to know that I don't even know what a WU is! :)...No worry...I'm in ....sanguine.....

(Does that relate to the 2 numbers I told you that appear? "8625/12500")

A Work Unit (WU) is the task that Stanford has sent to your computer to be worked one. A WU is a small portion of a much larger project, each of these projects are assigned a 4 digit number.

The WUs of each project are assigned a point value, depending on how much time Stanford estimates they will require. Each time you finish a WU, you and your team are awarded the points.

The numbers you refer to are are the "steps" required to complete the WU. Your computer has completed 8625 out of 12500 required steps. That WU is 69% complete.
(8625 / 12500 = 0.69)

I just noticed, some of the older projects have 3 digit ID numbers.

To: papasmurf; All

I'm still hanging in there.

This Wednesday and Thursday, will probably me my last gasp, before we shut down completely for the summer, but I'll be back in August, with a vengence. That I promise y'all.

I'll still have a little small core that'll be clocking up some work units. Maybe I can stay ahead of Lrenh and Malsua :)

It's been a fun 5 months, and since I'm totally into this now, starting in August, I'll give it all I got.

Our team owes you, and your organization, a huge debt of gratitude for the herculean amount of effort, and results, you have made. I know you'll be back, and in the meantime many, many more people will have benefited from your contributions.

Thanks, Klutz. Have a great summer!

Friend,

Klutz Dohanger, your contibution to our team's effort cannot be overstated. Having you on the team made it a realistic expectation to reach the Top 100. Now we can realistically expect to be in the Top 50 and maybe even the Top 30.

Fortunately, we have a great team thanks to the 300+ members and we should stay ahead of the DUmmies (in terms of daily production) until August.

We will def. look forward to having your CPUs back in August. Have a great summer and THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, thanks! I guess it completed it, because now it says "0/10000".

So, now that a WU has been completed.....how do I know 'which' WU it is? (I take it, once I know that, then I look it up on the lists that appear on these threads?

(sorry if this is sounding dense....apologies :)
