***This is a story about a baby born at 23 weeks***
Today Emmie-Roses Hospital has hit a major blow against us.
I believe some of the staff believe we are not providing the correct care for her and had us meet with the Ethics committee.
At most hospitals the Ethics committee is usually made up of staff, social workers, clergy, and parents of other children.
We had a room full of the staff, 1 surgeon, 2 social workers, and Stephanie and I. Lets just stack all the cards against us. After wasting 2 hours going over the issues, it is their Ethical recommendation to not continue life saving treatments to our baby! This includes vent support which she has been on since day one. Why dont you just turn the knife back and fourth after you stick it in our hearts! According to the committee we as parents of our child can not tell the U of M Doctors how to provide care to our child. They reserve the right to discontiune support when they feel like it.
They have not fed Emmie-Rose since 9/3/2006!
She had physical therapy this morning with NO problems. They moved her all over, pulled her legs in and out
no changes in facial expressions, no changes in heart rate etc. SHE WAS FINE!
I spoke with some other doctors tonight at some different hospitals that seem more willing to be able to work with her condition but they want to wait until Monday to see how she is doing before agreeing to a transfer.
I probably can not get a restraining order until Monday as well to keep the U from pulling the plug on her without our consent and give her food.

Almighty God,
Protect this precious life from those who lack the vision and
hope that you impart to us when we love you.
Cradle this tiny one, who has infinite value in your sight, in your
everlasting arms.
Lead these dear parents to the help they need to save their
baby. Bless them in their efforts, Lord. Give them wisdom and
guidance and lift them up.
We know you have a plan for precious Emmie-Rose.
Hear our prayers, oh Father God, and let this life instruct the lost
that you and you alone are the giver of life.
In the majestic name of Jesus,
AMEN!

Just filled out the complaint/commendation form.
Their hospital's reputation won't be helped by denying
care and food from a premie!

A very precocious 7 years old, 4'3 and growing fast. A success story as well.

Wonder if Vanderbilt would take this on. They're cutting edge with regard to preemies. That's where my son was born -- and saved.

This story has me so damn mad. It is as though the hospital, more than anything else, fears that this little girl will recover, thus proving them wrong.
I just don't get it! There she is, LIVING. How could they deny food and nutrition?? Perhaps she is destined to die soon, but who knows? They were wrong about her only having 2 days to live. And ultimately, every single one of us is born terminal - we are all going to die eventually.
If this were one of my children, this would already have escalated into a hostage situation. I would not hesitate to put a gun to the doctor's head and say "Feed her or you die." Especially at this point.

Those people at the hospital should be in the business of saving lives, not ending them. This whole thing is unbelievable! I don't know how this is not in the news!

" They have not fed Emmie-Rose since 9/3/2006! (as of 9/8/2006 at 56 days old)" I couldn't imagine being the parents in that situation. I believe it would be very.....very ugly!
