Excerpt -

Redmond, WA (AHN) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is pulling the XP operating system from its product line come Monday. The move comes 18 months after the company launched the Vista operating system.

Although Microsoft will not sell the XP program any longer, they will still generate revenue from providing support for the software as it will no longer be free. Microsoft will offer extended support packages for XP until at least 2014.

Goodbye Windows XP. It was a mediocre operating system at best, clearly inferior to Mac OS X for desktop computers and Linux for servers. But it was better than Vista.

I have a Vista laptop on it’s way next week. I’d heard that the newest Vista SP helped out with a lot of the bugs.

I guess we’ll see.

I bought my macbook last week, and that completed my migration to Mac. I am not an elitest, liberal, and I don’t think I am smarter than you.

But I also get connected to my network without issues. I havent seen a blue screen of death in months.

I am not your typical Mac user....but I also got so sick of Vista asking me what I wanted to do, after I told it what to do. I have enough people asking me if I am an idiot. I dont need a machine to do that.

Vista on the home-built desktop, and XP on my 5 year old laptop (on which I just upped the memory to the full 1 gig and installed a new hard drive). Guess which one boots faster...

Yes, the XP laptop by a long shot. Both run the same Antivirus and antispyware programs. The desktop is drastically faster in terms of hardware, but Vista has so many bells and whistles that it drags a bit on boot.

Once running, it seems to be plenty quick though.

Yeah that's why everybody's dumping it and moving on to Vista or Macs. NOT. XP kicks ass.

I have been running Vista Ultimate for about a month now and have to say I haven't had any problems as of yet...It's fast has some good junk it's like XP on steroids.
the only thing I would recommend is that you have at lest 2 gigs of DDR2 memory

and for your mac people I also own a mac pro and I love it ...I use it mostly for my home recording studio

I think MS made a huge mistake in marketing Vista as an XP replacement. Would have been much better had they worked a bit longer, and made Vista the “Premium” OS from MS, and let XP remain, as is (with security updates) in the product mix. Whenever possible, you should always have a good, better, best or small, medium, large range of offerings.

I mean, what if a great automotive manufacturer, like Packard or Kaiser, paired their line down to one...oh, nevermind. Or, if the largest auto manufacturer, like GM, refused to give people what they really wanted, quality, service, and value...uh, oh yeah.

It says a lot about a company, especially one like MS, to take an action which indicates they have no confidence in their newest flagship release.

And think, they could’ve had XP, Vista, and next year-Horizon (or whatever)!

apt-get install reality...

Our son has an iMac. It is one of the most elegant and functional machines I’ve ever seen.

Typically incompetent and misleading media reporting.

MSFT is terminating sales of retail versions of XP
to resellers, but they are not “pulling” XP, or
fully dropping it - they can’t.

Blista won’t run on low-end PCs, so (OEM) XP remains
available for them, for years.

Enterprise buyers can still exercise “downgrade”
rights, buy Fista PCs, and install XP on them.

Copies of XP in the retail channel will remain for
sale. Doubtless many eBay speculators stocked up,
expecting bids to spike next week. Perhaps a few
mainstream resellers did likewise.

I’m planning to build a PC after the AMD 790GX
chipset is released, and lately bought a copy of
XP for that purpose.

With any luck, I’ll never run Vista. If some key
apps (esp. CAD) were available on Linux, I’d flush
all my MSFT code down my toilet.
