Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

but some of us have the understanding, some don’t. Ours manifests in a...better communication...is the only word that fits—with animals and plants. Sounds hokey, but I guess you have to be there. My Cherokee side comes from my paternal great grandma. They lived in NC and Kentucky.

A city gal moved a quarter mile from my place in Wellton, she and her uncle would stop in the coffee shop, where I worked and I would tell them something my Siamese cat had said or any of the animals.
Eileen would nod and smile.
A few months later, Eileen came tearing into my yard, in her very old truck, jumped out yelling “My cat talked to me, I thought you were nuts, when you said your animals talked!!!”
We had brought the male Siamese from Oregon with us and he ruled the roost.
Eileen came down one day to tell me another cat story.
Her bed was near the door and in the morning, early, her cats would come to the screen door and meow, she would wake up and let them in to eat, LOL, that means she got to open the door about 6 times.
One morning, she was more alert and thought “wait a minute, I don’t own that many cats!!”, so she put on her glasses and let the cats back out one by one and the last one was my Bambino.....he had learned the code word to get the door opened.
With my white hair, I look Scots, but I can see that I showed my true genes even as a young person, dark haired.
I have always been a gardner.
We had a survival retreat in the 1970’s and it was going well for the folks who bought a lease on an acre or two and it had water, so was a good plan.
Then the owner died and the wife took up with a crack pot and the whole thing fell apart.
Instead of “competitive currency devaluations”, spiking food prices will likely cause competitive currency appreciation in 2009. Foreign exchange reserves exist for just this type of emergency. Central banks around the world will lower domestic food prices by either directly selling off their reserves to appreciate their currencies or by using them to purchase grain on the world market.<<<
I admit that I read it fast and my mind was made up at once that this came from al gore’s group.
What do they want us to do? Starve with the rest of the world?
Still, it is interesting and I think, if you can, then plant food.
Other countries make water out of the ocean water, why not in California?

Interesting, I have heard of several kidnappings in Las Vegas, San Diego and Denver on the police scanners, that never made it into the news.

You be careful, it is an dangerous area you live in/near.
In the summer, Yucca does not cool off at night, but in Kingman it does in the summer, LOL, in the winter, it is so cold that you can’t tell if it cooled off or not.
I love Yucca in the winter.

Where you trained at Yucca, is on the edge of Dutchman’s Flats, and there you will find flat gold, thin ragged sheets almost as big as a dime.
It is over a little closer to the south/west mountains.
LOL talking cats... I have to tell you about our talking sheep...
We used to raise purebred Shropshire sheep and when I was in college, my sister decided she wanted to show them like I used to do. So, they were at Timmonium (Maryland State Fair) and my mother was helping my sister. My mother was crouched down behind one sheep who was on a fitting stand and she was carding and trimming the wool so you had a nice smooth blocky fleece. Anyway as she was working there a little red-headed freckled boy came up and started talking to the sheep - he said “Hey sheep - I’m going punch you in the nose - how would you like that!” My mother couldn’t resist and replied - “Nnnoottt verrrrrry wwellll” kind of imitating a sheep sound. The kid took off running calling his mother and yelling “I found a sheep that can talk” His mother came back with him.
My mother felt kind of bad for ‘fleecing’ the kid into thinking the sheep had talked. So she explained to the mother that it was she and not the sheep that had spoken to her son. The mother replied - “I thought it was strange that HE found a talking sheep.” Not strange that a sheep would be talking but definitely strange that her son would be the one to find one. People!!!

I spent 6 weeks at the foot of Hualapai Peak - kind of NW of Yucca. We were playing war games. That was in 1963 in a training exercise called ‘Desert Strike’.
Lots of rattlesnakes, cactus and even flash floods through those arroyos without a cloud in the sky.
I loved the prospectors converted farm wagon/hovel/all-purpose mule powered vehicles. Perfect bug-out setup. (maybe a little slow though).
Well Granny, I turned into a pumpkin about an hour ago, so guess I better hit the hay.

Don’t know if you’ve seen it yet, but there was a horrible plane crash in Buffalo, NY @10:20 (our time). 44 people and 4 crew dead. Was reading the posts on FR. So sad.

That sounds like Doug Brown, when he was about 4 or 5, I had spent several years getting a crop of lemons on my Myers lemon tree, they are small and grow well in pots, so were outside my door getting sun.
Doug thought they were just the right size for throwing, so he picked them, and then I drove in and he threw them over the top of the car at me.
OK, that I could understand, but then he came around the car and checked to see if he had hit me..........
Your boy at the fair, was a meanie, who as his mother well knew, would never get talked to by anyone.
It’s so great that you joined FReeRepublic. I love seeing new users on here. I hope you get a lot from it (although maybe you’ve been lurking here for a while). LOL I had to join within a few minutes of discovering this place in 2002. It’s addictive!

I remember that you were stationed at Yucca, but don’t recall anything that was offensive to me, the truth is damned big rattlesnakes and lots of them, flash floods and so hot you can’t breathe and in the winter so beautiful and healing that you want to stay.
But no worse than the Wellton area.
I tried to move there 3 different times and every time, the deals fell through and on the last one, there was something strange with it and I would still be fighting the greenies and BLM.
I was sure that if I had a burro, I could find all that I was missing as Bill drove by all the spots that I wanted to stop.
