Pawn shops are okay, but beware excessively worn or mistreated guns. As for the "best for the money", I'd have to know whether you had a commercial hunting rifle in mind, or a good, basic military surplus piece.

Someone else mentioned the Savage bolt-actions - those are very highly regarded. Good prices, too. If you're more inclined toward a milsurp rifle, look into the Yugoslavian M48 Mausers. Those were actually built after WWII on German tooling. Check Shotgun News for vendors. You might also find a good deal on a "Russian capture" Mauser 98k, though you'll spend a while scrubbing off the thick layer of cosmoline.

So, it depends very much of your tastes. Tell us more and we'll go from there.

Check our Accuracy Systems for that re-barrel project.

If you buy something with a C&R FFL, what sort of records is the seller required to keep on said transaction?

You need to log the firearm's serial number, seller, importer (if of foreign manufacture), caliber and type (rifle or handgun) into your C&R log within 24 hours of receiving the firearm from your shipper. That's it.

At some point, you may have to show your C&R firearms and log book to an ATF agent - The ATF seems to have quite a bit of extra time on its hands right now, so "audits" of C&R collectors are not unheard of. As someone who has been recently "audited", I can assure you that it's no big deal.

ETA: If the seller also has a C&R license (and the firearm is C&R eligible), he is required to keep essentially the same info his his logbook.

If you really know what you’re doing, a .303 Enfield is an “elephant gun”.

I have an SMLE that I really love. Hits hard and is surprisingly accurate for an iron sighted gun almost a hundred years old. My granddad was in the British Army and carried one in the trenches at Passchendaele.

That’s the catch - I had forgotten about the logbook.

Passchendaele had trenches?

The stories I read about it seemed to concentrate on the swampy, mirey, impenetrable muck.

All of the above.

Soldiers drowned in the muddy water at the trench bottoms after wounds that would otherwise be survivable.

I agree with this list, but might add the Mini-14 for .223 or Mini-30 for the 7.62x39. I have both and love both. I also thought the 30-30 might do well in bad times. I have a Ruger M70 in 30.06 for the reach out and touch shots. I have a 7 mag. but ammo may not be everywhere and I don't see enough difference in the 30.06 to worry about. I had a Savage 30.06 but got rid of it for reliability reasons.

Much of this depends on what the writer will do with it. Just as a general gun I would stick with .223 merely for all around long shots and ammo is everywhere.

When the SHTF, rifles will be laying all over the place.

Good point.

When I was a young 2LT I was sent to the extension course held at my post for training as the company NBC Officer that's Nuclear, Biological & Chemical Warfare. I questioned the wisdom of only issuing a single atropine injector when three might be the required treatment. The patient response of the NCO conducting training was chilling:

Sir, in the event of a real chemical attack, there will be lots of injectors laying around unused. Their owners won't care if you take them. In fact they won't care about anything ever again....

I'd say either a Springfield A3-03 in .30-06 or a Garand in .30-06 or a Enfield Jungle Model 7 in .308.

How about an Enfield 2B in .308?

Squantos speaks highly of them.

I also have the right to burn money in my bar-b-que pit, but it makes about as much sense as that rifle.

Living in the Socialist’s black hole of NYC, I’d already have a local target on my head with a C&R license. Nevermind state and federal coming after me when the SHTF.

Not exactly anonymous on here, but still, at least I could walk into a Brooklyn gun shop and say “two bricks of Russian seven-six-two.”

Why would anyone in the world want something that foolish?

Why would someone question another persons wants? This makes a lot more sense than a lot of crap my friends buy.

Practical rate-of-fire is only 40 rounds a minute?
