For those interested in such things. Freepers that have farm experience are aware of how efficient diesel tractors are. I put five gallons in mine and bush hog all summer. Here is a link to some guys that convert vehicles to tractor power and have gotten as much as 50mpg from a full size pickup! http://www.shadetreeconversions.com/

Here again the government will obstruct your efforts. Tractors are exempt from pollution restrictions required on licensed passenger vehicles. Take away those regulations and every automobile company could achieve a 30-50% increase in gasoline engine efficiency.

I bush hog with a Kubota maybe twice a month for, at most, half a day each time... And six gallons does not last me all summer.

Unless you live in a state that doesn’t mandate testing like me. :)

Buyer beware when the usual conspiracy accusations surface along with clumsy inaccuracies such as “We are obtaining U.S. patent copyrights on the plans to our vehicles.”

I don’t doubt these converted old beasts will achieve 50 mpg in place of the original V-8 20 mpg. So will yanking the V-8 and putting a Briggs and Stratton under the hood. Never, ever try to merge onto a freeway with one. Ford’s current model Rangers (rebadged Mazdas) are touted at 27 mpg highway. That’s with a four squirrel power plant under the hood, though.

Also beware comparing old American iron (especially pickup trucks) to contemporary European sedans. The sedan is the closest to an ideal aerodynamic shape for a small automobile. A wagon or van with a tapered nose and sharply bobbed tailgate is better for larger cars. Eurosedans are not as big as the typical American family car. SUVs, minivans, and the like are scarcely to be seen there. Speaking of which, the Olds Silhouette recently sitting in my driveway touts 27 mpg highway, and it has beavers under the hood rather than squirrels. I fear no freeway in it.

I have a 970 John Deere, 4 cylinder, 40 hp.

Unless I use the backhoe, 8 gallons will last most of the year.

If the Cap & Tax passes, I’ll be buying a diesel electric generator to run the house.

Ill-noise requires it only in the Chicagoland and East St. Louis metro areas. Something about big cities and pollution. That’s also where you cannot get non-ethanol gas. It’s an OBD II tattle tale based system which cuts it off at models older than 1996. The older direct measurement systems have been removed.

However you Slice and dice it, those dead white men will only let big oil put about 45 HP/gal in Diesel fuel. So tractor. Smactor, thats all the power you have. About 25 years ago, someome put a Perkins Diesel from a Massey-Fergusen tractor in a Mercury Sedan. Acceleration was “stately”. Since he only built one,I don’t guess it was a success.
