Jul 23 RadioShack Partners With Lance to Form New Cycling Team in 2010
by Brooke McMillan (LAF Staff)

RadioShack Corporation is proud to announce a partnership with seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong to form a new American Pro-Tour cycling team. Beginning in 2010, Lance Armstrong will compete for Team RadioShack as a cyclist, runner and triathlete in events around the world, including the 2010 Tour de France.

“This has been a great season so far – the response in the countries we’ve been to has been amazing and it’s clear now that this was the right choice. Utilizing the massive media attention that the sport receives has been the perfect vehicle to help spread the LIVESTRONG message around the world,” said Lance Armstrong. “To be able to compete for an American team comprised of the world’s top cyclists, supported by the best coaches and staff – I couldn’t be happier to partner with RadioShack, a truly iconic American brand,” said Lance Armstrong.

Perhaps Tandy can donate the leather with which to make Team RS lederhosen for the Alpine stages.

Kind of like 7-11 gearing up to compete with Von's/Pavilions?

I can’t say because I have NO idea what a Von’s/Pavillions are....But, yes, they can compete because the biggest hurdle is the infrastructure and they have it in place.

I know what you mean, but Contador is Lance Armstrong 12-14 years ago in so many ways. Better climber, though, than Lance was pre-cancer.

Ummm -
Columbia and Slipstream are 2 different teams. Contador on either would be awesome, but I hear he is looking at a Spanish team. I guess we’ll find out in Sept.

Garmin, Columbia and now RadioShack?

You think the French will invite 3 US Teams?

Columbia and Garmin will definitely be back, and the UCI Pro Tour isn’t going to keep out the team with the most famous cyclist in the world on it.

“.....and the UCI Pro Tour isn’t going to keep out the team with the most famous cyclist in the world on it.”

The UCI Pro Tour can do some odd things.

Contador “won” the 2007 TdF after Rass drugged out. Still Contador did good riding.

But last year his team, Astana, was not invited because of what Vino and a couple of other riders did.

I don't think the TdF organizers will go with 3 US teams.

I think it will be RadioShack and Columbia.

Garmin will have to make other plans for July 2010.

Garmin was the second place team this year with two guys in the top 10. I would think that would get them back. Presuming that Wiggins and Vandevelde stay on the team. It may be a long shot, but at this point they are going to be some of the stronger teams in the race (despite Columbia’s rather poor showing this year).

“......(despite Columbia’s rather poor showing this year).”

How many stage wins did Garmin get? Did they get more than Columbia?

I'm just saying I think having 30% of the Teams in next years TdF be American Teams might be a bit much to the Europeans.

We shall see.

I hope Armstrong kicks Contador’s arse.Didn’t like that guy at all.

VeloNews today: Contador Rips Armstrong

Tour de France winner Alberto Contador on Monday launched a stinging attack on teammate Lance Armstrong, saying relations between the two were tense throughout the race.

"My relationship with Lance is non-existent. Even if he is a great champion, I have never had admiration for him and I never will," the Spaniard told a news conference in Madrid.

[snip] ..."It was a delicate situation, tense, the two riders who had most weight on the team did not have an easy relationship and that puts the rest of the technical staff and the riders in an uncomfortable position," said the 26-year-old Contador, who also won the Tour in 2007.

Well, guess that settles the question about where AC will or at least won't be riding next year!

My storybook fantasy would be to see a resurrection of Floyd Landis to give him his just reward for being screwed over by UCI and French media witch hunters. Lance must have some compassion for what FL went through

Your storybook fantasy is just that - fantasy. Floyd cheated - blatantly. His ride to yellow that fateful day was simply impossible. His testosterone %'s were insanely high. His excuses shifted all over the place from "bad test" to "I did a shot of Jack Daniels the night before" to "I've got big balls."

Americans cheat too. Don't tell me you believe Tyler Hamilton too? Barry Bonds? Roger Clemens? Bill Clinton?

Actually, Contador's story parallels LA's in many ways. The guy had a brain aneurysm and came back from that. IF he's clean, he has a chance to be one of the greatest cyclists of all time... IF. He's won all 3 grand tours. He's young. He climbs and TT's.

And frankly, he kept his yap shut during the Tour when clearly he was totally pissed the entire time. (He's no longer keeping his yap shut though.)

Many would disagree with your statement. Mostly on the fact that the tests before and after the hot one were normal.

Lots of “odd things” were brought out in the next years fighting about the way samples were taken, tested and stored. Enough that a lot of changes were made.

Floyd's side raised enough questions that he would have been innocent in a jury trial. But the charge would have to stand or all Hell would have broken loose with other riders.

At least this years TdF was clean - so far.

more quotes from the Sky News version

"He is a great rider and has completed a great race but it is another thing on a personal level, where I have never had great admiration for him and I never will.

"On this Tour, the days in the hotel were harder than those on the road.

"The situation was tense and delicate because the relationship between myself and Lance extended to the rest of the staff.

"The two riders who had most weight on the team did not have an easy relationship and that puts the rest of the technical staff and the riders in an uncomfortable position."

After a successful return to the race following his retirement, third-placed Armstrong will return next year in the colours of his own team he will set up for the new season.

Contador will also be in new colours next year, as he was clearly not happy with Astana for bringing in another big name in Armstrong.

"We'll have to see what happens," Contador said of his fture. "I don't know where I will go but it will clearly be with a team that is 100 percent behind me."

I doubt he really means that first part. In interviews he has said Lance was his hero and his inspiration during his hospitalization for an aneurysm. But either way I don't blame him for being ticked that Lance was brought onto his team after he was chosen to run with Bruyneel. It was all just un. fortunate.
