Delighted antiques dealer discovers 1,300-year-old Knights Templar relic at car boot sale
Daily Mail ^ | 4th August 2009 | By Daily Mail Reporter

An antiques dealer has picked up what could be a priceless church relic dating back 1,300 years at a car boot sale. The small piece of painted wood is believed to have come from a box which the Knights Templar used to protect religious items as they moved across Europe during the Crusades of the Middle Ages. Quite how this ornate piece of wood found its way to a car boot sale in Yorkshire is anyone's guess. But it could bring Leeds antiques dealer Martin Roberts a big windfall at the next stop on its unlikely journey - an auction house in London. Martin Roberts with his find: The 'Knights Templar' tabarnacle door which could date back to 700AD Analysts believe the item, which measures 10 inches by four inches, is the lid or door from a tabernacle and could be 1,300 years old. ... Mr Roberts took the tabernacle door to a friend in Doncaster who, after studying the item's intricate design, thought Jesus and St George were illustrated. He then showed it to other colleagues in the trade, who suggested that the pictures may in fact depict an angel and a Roman horseman killing a Turk. He said most of his friends agreed that the piece was probably of Eastern European or Russian origin, but no one could say precisely what it was with any certainty. 'The first thing they all told me was, "It's old",' he said, 'but they found it difficult to tell exactly how old it was. 'Most experts are of the view that this piece was more than likely from a tabernacle which the Knights Templar would have used to carry the sacrament and other religious items.'

I agree, it does look Byzantine.

The bottom figure does indeed to be wearing the garb of a Roman legionnaire, and I wonder if that is not intended to be Constantine. The problem, though is that the figure under the horse looks moorish to me, which would be anachronistic.

Here is a statue of Constantine:

The top figure appears to be Christ.

The second row could be a bishop on the left, and a Christian King on the right (Charlemagne?)

Yes, some of the electrical systems seem like revenge on the buyer.

It may have held the Holy Handgrenade of Antioch...

Templars did not muck about.

to me, the story seems all wrong, “1,300 yrs old” etc.

It looks Eastern Orthodox or Armenian Orthodox.

It’s like “tailgate party” or “truck patch.” Stuff we make up to separate furrin’ spies from native citizens.

Not just King Phillip the Fair of France, but also his “pet” Pope Clement V (rumor has it he had the previous less compliant Pope poisoned).

Jacques de Molay the last Grand Master of the Order of The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (the Knights Templar) supposedly demanded that the King and the Pope meet him “before the Throne of God” to answer for their crimes, and both died within the year.

Charlemagne is who I first thought of as well, for that figure on the middle right.
