A DEADLY plague could sweep across Europe, doctors fear, after an outbreak of a virus in Ukraine plunged the country and its neighbours into a state of panic.

The story is worrisome enough without this: Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has been touring hospitals where victims are being treated and presidential elections in January could be cancelled .

I have very distinct memories of FReeper theories in 2000 that Bill Clinton was going to use an Executive Order canceling or postponing the 2000 Presidential elections. I also remember overhearing some liberals in a convenience store in 2008 claiming that George W Bush was going to use an Executive Order to postpone or cancel the 2008 elections.

It's not going to happen.

Every year or two the media predicts a mega-plague to wipe out a third of the human race. When it predictably fizzles with nothing happening, they reach down into their muckraker bag and come up with a new a wilder idiotic prediction like this. It is a deterministic process - prediction fails, make a bigger prediction of the same kind. They hope the repetition and the volume of their screaming will obscure the underlying stupidity and the endless track record of hopeless error.
