Would a forum to invite newbies to ask questions help increase participation?

So.. we want to filter out people who are not aggressive? This is a deliberately Darwinian technique? We do not want to become TOO big, right?

I was thinking craig's list.

Welcome to FRee Republic! I remember having some difficulty navigating my first few months, but soon enough you’ll be able to get what you want. The current latest posts are on the main “Comments” page of “Everything,” and if you look, you can see how many posts to the thread there are. That will give you some idea of the “hot topics.”

Let me encourage you to just read for a few months. I am STILL learning new things about FR after 10+ years, it’s a very user friendly site.

Thanks for being a newbie, or “N00b” or any of the other things you’ll be called. Most N00bs get a bit of hazing, but hang in there, you will soon get a reputation from what you post, and you will find yourself in the middle of a bunch of conservatives! (Like a herd of cats, we DO tend to be difficult at times...)

Again, Welcome! ;-D

For instance, I'd like to see a "block" for the current hottest top 20 posts. This would measure hits over time, weighing the last hour as much more important than hits more than 12 hours ago.

That would just lead you to the Religion Forum...

two of three

Dude. New people visit. The interface is awkward. They leave. We could have more influence than we do. I want to avoid elections like we had in 2008. This is a great place, I want visitors to stick around.

What if I can’t post this question? How will you ever know?

Dude. New people visit...

First my name isn't dude. Second I was trying to help you. You're on your own now.

“That’s what the “Activity” sort already does. “

Thanks. Sorry for the ignorance... I’m new here.

For other newbies... I think the “activity” thing could be more intuitive. Or, I’ll admit I sometimes miss the obvious.

There are no dumb questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.

“The best way to increase participation is to jump right in and ...”

No.

The best way is to have new people be able to quickly understand.

Intuitive.

If you WANT to KEEP visitors, expecting them to figure everything out... to jump right in... this is NOT the most effective technique.

Jump right in, the beatdown only hurts for a little while.

Hey, I lurked for 2 years and still got crosswise with A+Bert shortly after signing up. (Old timers will appreciate the gravity of that!)

Another thing to note: Use the actual headline of the article. That way others can search and see if the story has already been posted.
Because, lord knows, every time a story about the Sissy Weakling in the Oval is produced, you’ll always be tempted to rewrite the headline to “Obama sticks it to us again”, “Obama bows to the Burger King” or some such.

My recommendation would be to post the following threads:

"What should I do to get more hits for my blog?"

and

"How come Free Republic doesn't have avatars?"

For the best response you should post them in breaking news.

“All you seek is here. “

I check out the youtube, and thanks.

On the other hand... while I am certainly willing to work to figure out the rules... what I really “seek” is an easier onramp for visitors.

Directing visitors to a different site is awkward.

I keep reading “this is how we do things” and that is great... but... if, say...

If a bunch of older tea party people wander in with curiosity — just piss on them?

Do you still need 51% of the vote to win elections?

The best way is to have new people be able to quickly understand.

As soon as you make something fool proof, along comes a fool looking to make a name for themselves.
