Ship buried in 18th century unearthed at WTC site
Democrat Herald (Albany) ^

Posted on 07/14/2010 8:19:59 PM PDT by Lorianne

Workers excavating at the World Trade Center site have unearthed the 32-foot-long hull of a ship likely buried in the 18th century.

Archeologists say the vessel probably was used along with other debris to fill in land to extend lower Manhattan into the Hudson River.

Archeologists Molly McDonald and A. Michael Pappalardo were at the site of the Sept. 11 attacks on Tuesday morning when workers uncovered the artifacts. They call the find significant but say more study is needed to determine the age of the ship.

The two archeologists work for AKRF, a firm hired to document artifacts discovered at the site. They found a 100-pound boat anchor in the same area on Wednesday, but they're not sure if it belongs to the ship.

“True, but being hit by a 767 must be equal to at least a medium size earthquake.”

Again, bagels and donuts as you say.

I lived through both the Northridge earthquake AND the Loma Prieta earthquake. In both areas. Less than 10 miles from the epicenters in both cases. Can I pick the time to move, or what?

A blow above ground cannot be compared to a seismic event, totally different in the yield of destruction. The folks in the WTC towers got the worst of it, BUT it was limited to the buildings directly involved. (Yes, I know about the damage to buildings on the periphery.)

So you're saying that the men who built the WTC knew that the ground on which they were about to erect two 114 story buildings was landfill?!! Maybe this is why the towers fell.

Well yeah, of course.

I mean, other than the fireball explosions and the top-down collapse floor by floor all the way to the ground...

It was the landfill.

This is the best pic I could find to illustrate the point I wanted to make re your comment. Focus on the grayed skyline in the background, and not the foreground that is well-lit. This is the NYC skyline...notice that the downtown area (to the left) has many skyscrapers, then there's a fall-off in building height, then the Empire State Building on 34th St., and then more tall buildings in the 40s and 50s.

The skyline height follows the outline of the bedrock and its proximity to the surface...except for the Empire State Building. The reason for this is that for the ESB they had to go deeper and were able to get into bedrock. The landfill for the WTC was jsut a surface phenomenon and pushed the Hudson River back...they went into bedrock for the foundations for those buildings.

Thanks for the ping!, Clemenza, and the post, Lorianne. On another ancient ship/WTC note, the Tyger, Adrean Block's ship of 1613 was likely dug up when they were building the original WTC. Block was the first European to ever spend the night in Manhattan, and explored the waters around the metro area and Long Island, and gave his name to Block Island.

For the sake of argument, let’s just say that you have a point. However - and a big however at that — these buildings which fell were erected decades upon decades ago.

My point is, we know so much more today than we did half a century ago when it comes to building tall structures. And given the structural collapse of the Twin Towers (top to bottom), how are you connecting this to a failure of the foundation?

I think that many of us aren’t clear about where you see a connection.

Awesome!

Why not? Since the WTC/Mosque is in hot debate these days, I think we should halt any other building on Manhattan due to historical artifacts.

Attorneys? Anyone? Weigh in?

...Also, the place should be annointed with pork grease.

I've been dying this for months. Did anyone own a pig farm here? If not, we should annoint this property with the things that make America great: baby back ribs; a rasher of bacon every morning; filet mignon with a bacon overlay; chitlins; potato soup with bacon; potatoes cooked in bacon grease; potato pancakes cooked in bacon grease....And how much lard will the area of the proposed site hold....?

Geometry students?

That looks just like the shoes Jimmy Hoffa was wearing, when he disappeared!

Please do not ask me how I know what he was wearing; I hate being to lie in public...unless I'm paid by the word ;-)

As my wife suggested, use pig blood as a ‘special additive’ in the concrete.
