LIMA (Reuters) An ancient ceremonial ground used by a Pre-Columbian civilization for human sacrifices has been uncovered on Peru's northern coast, archaeologists said on Thursday.
The discovery appears to reinforce prevailing theories about a ceremony known as "the presentation" that was carried out by the Moche people, an agricultural civilization that flourished between 100 B.C. and 800 A.D.
Carlos Wester La Torre, director of the Bruning Museum in Peru and a leader of the dig, said the ceremonial site likely hosted ritual killings of prisoners of war.
Photographs taken at the site show more than half a dozen skeletons on the floor of the hall.
"There was a great ceremonial hall or passage integrated into the rest of the architecture that establishes the presence of certain figures of the Moche elite and also the practice of complex rituals such as human sacrifice," Wester told Reuters.
His team uncovered a 60-meter-long (197-foot-long) corridor opening up to face three equidistant porticos and five thrones on the archaeological site's main pyramid.

Peru,, one of the many places I’d like to go dig around in for awhile.. besides the National Archives, Area 51, Joe Biden’s brain.. Oh and the new Cairo museum.
Human sacrifice eh? There goes the theory that life in the Americas was pristine until the evil Europeans came here and destroyed their way of life.
The Reuters fake journalist calls this civilization?????
Why Pagan civilizations fail.
Mel Gibson's movie Apocalypto laid that lie quite bare.
Yes, it did, except for the braindead fools who still chant that mantra about the evil Europeans. What would have happened to the indigenous tribal hunter-gatherers in North America had nobody crossed the ocean? They would have been sacrificed en masse to the never satiated "gods" of Meso, or South America.
What would have happened to them if the 'discovery' was from the west, and done by Chinese, or Japanese coming from mainland East Asia? Tibet tells the story there, they would have been ruthlessly displaced, likely totally exterminated. The same thing would have happened if the 'invaders' from the east were Arab Muslims, who were as likely to do it, in the same timeframe, as the Europeans did. Total extermination would have been their fate, for sitting on resources they could neither utilize, nor defend against a society which had the knowledge to utilize them, and the power to take them.
It was only the Europeans, and Judeo-Christian thought which allowed even a bare-shell semblance of their way of life to continue. Why? Because only that culture had inculcated the reverence for human life necessary to even partially spare "the other"...

Excellent post. Thank you.
The discovery appears to reinforce prevailing theories about a ceremony known as "the presentation" that was carried out by the Moche people, an agricultural civilization that flourished between 100 B.C. and 800 A.D.As opposed to the industrial pre-Columbian civilizations.
Yet our 'civilization' murders a million+ unborn children a year. We're so superior.
By all evidence, the Moche made the Aztecs and Mayans look like humanitarians.
