Freepers I need some help (and I'm in a snowstorm and can't get to my office to check the one source that I know of that might have this):
In "Patriot's History of the United States," we wrote about the incident where Clinton exited Marine One and saluted the guard, who saluted but did not turn and face Clinton as he walked off. I'm pretty sure this was documented in Robert "Buzz" Patterson's book "Dereliction of Duty."
We had a nasty letter claiming that Clinton was no longer in office when that happened. I find that impossible to believe, as Patterson was his SS guard and wrote the book during the Clinton term.
Can anyone else validate or verify the infamous "salute" incident and when it occurred?
bump
There is some info HERE
Lower ranking officers and enlisted render a salute to a senior officer and the senior officer returns that salute. The lower ranking officer or enlisted holds the salute in place until it is returned and then smartly finishes it. Looking at the senior officer is not a part of the protocol.
All I can say for sure is that the current President tends to salute with his middle finger.
As I recall from about 60 years ago, to salute one must be in uniform and under cover, meaning with hat or cap on. Otherwise, no go. The question then becomes does the CiC have a uniform or cover?
Does anyone remember the 1988 Democrat Convention when Slick was a speaker. Ann Richards was the keynote and Slick spoke the night before. He talked so long the audience first got restless, then started to grumble and finally they started booing. However, Slick was like the Energizer Bunny and kept going and going and going and ..... while they booed and booed and booed.
Might want to brush up on that one.
Recently CONgress ‘allowed’ as how vets may now render a hand salute as the flag passes, etc.
Beeen doing that for years.
Also - if military members were to meet in public and recognize each other - even in civvies - a salute is rendered.
Never had a problem with it.
It’s been traditional for the CIC to return salutes rendered though not in uniform or “covered”. Obama’s are the poorest I’ve seen from a POTUS in my lifetime!
Incorrect. Robert "Buzz" Patterson was one of Clinton's senior military aides; not a Secret Service agent, tasked with carrying the nuclear football.
Ah, good. Thanks. I have his book, as I say, but haven’t been able to get to it. Nevertheless, the entire story appears to be a fabrication. I think we removed this from our book a long time ago, but wanted to make sure there was no truth to it.
