FDA gets new powers with food safety bill

On Tuesday, Congress passed food safety legislation providing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with new powers. Trying to halt a series of disease outbreaks in the nation’s food supply – and fresh off last summer’s salmonella outbreak and subsequent recall of 500 million eggs – the lame-duck Congress was under pressure to pump up the FDA’s inspection capabilities.

And so it did. In essence, the FDA is now charged with preventing food-borne disease outbreaks rather than trying to contain them once rampant.

To “justify” such promotions..they NEED new “initiatives”

IMHO...this issue is the principle driver behind the whole immigration debate..(remember Teddy Kennedy’s little 1986 gift....and George Bush’s “see you at the signing” in 2006)

Immigration produces a quantum leap in population..with a corresponding quantum leap in Federal services across the board. It is the principle reason that DC will NEVER shrink itself..and indeed goes out of its way to encourage new dependents in every way.

No control over the courts.

IMO, staff the same facilities with poorly-paid and poorly motivated US citizens, and keep the current incentives for the facilities operators cut corners, and you will get the same result. In this case, as regards improving safety in the food supply chain, the “illegals” issues is a red herring.
