Although you've surely seen it, you might not have noticed it. During a cloudless twilight, just before sunrise or after sunset, part of the atmosphere above the horizon appears slightly off-color, slightly pink or orange. Called the Belt of Venus, this off-color band between the dark eclipsed sky and the blue sky can be seen in nearly every direction including that opposite the Sun. Straight above, blue sky is normal sunlight reflecting off the atmosphere. In the Belt of Venus, however, the atmosphere reflects light from the setting (or rising) Sun which appears more red. Below the Belt of Venus, the atmosphere appears more dark because no sunlight reaches it. The Belt of Venus can be seen from any location with a clear horizon. Pictured above last month over Mercedes, Argentina, a panoramic vista featuring the Belt of Venus was digitally stitched together from 16 smaller images. The belt is frequently caught by accident in other photographs.

There used to be a painter guy on Sat AM TV (I can’t remember his name, just his favorite phrase, “magic white”) that showed how to do these colors. I will never forget because he said that “you can’t do what you see in nature. If you put the yellow next to the blue you will get green”. That is why in paintings you see the blue on the bottom then red and then yellow. No one ever notices. I still think if one looks carefully there is a hint of green in the real thing.
“Although you’ve surely seen it, you might not have noticed it.”
Yep, that would be me. Thanks for posting. I’ve learned something new today.
I never knew this aspect of twilight had a name....I have witnessed it thousands of times....
Now the REAL Venus is currently the evening star, and putting on quite a show, currently right near Jupiter....
The ‘green flash’ is there.
The OPPOSITE of thius phenomenon is called the “Chastity Belt”.
Bob Ross? The white guy w/ the afro and his “happy little trees”? Love that show
yup Bob Ross...and the baby squirrels....and the puffy little clouds...
my Mother in law loved that guy....she had her picture taken with him at a book signing....she was devistated when he died....
Next month we’ll get Venus, Jupiter and the Moon to within a few degrees of each other.
The truth is, I’d never heard it called that, ever before. :’)
“King Arthur! King Arthur! You gave me the wrong key!”
Thanks!
It’s one of those little-known facts, and you have educated your entire APOD ping list to it! I’ll pat you on the back for that. [smiles, pats Civ on the back]
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
