ELLENSBURG -- From Bigfoot to the disappearance of D.B. Cooper, the Pacific Northwest is full of mysteries. Another mystery burred deep in the hills of eastern Washington keeps resurfacing.

Ellensburg and its surrounding valleys and Manastash Ridge are beautiful in any season.

Some believe what lies beneath is a deep, dark hole with supernatural powers.

A man named Red Elk is one of the only people alive known to have ever seen the mysterious hole.

Didn't Art Bell call this Mel’s Hole. He did 4 hours shows on it. Bottomless hole. they would through dead cows in and never hear them land.

He did but I don't recall any definitive investigation confirming it. Reminds me of the purported hole into which Russians reportedly lowered a microphone thousands of feet. They allegedly recorded “sounds of hell.” Art Bell and his successor have played this recording, a frightening cacophony of screams, groans, and cackles which, if not from hell, sounded like hell.

Many strange and unexplained goings-on have occurred between Manastash Ridge and Liberty/Tronson area. I ride dirt bikes and camp in the area and, although having never encountered the bottomless hole, have come back with stories that dissuaded some fellow off-roaders from ever exploring the area in the daytime, much less staying for the night.

I don’t know specifically about the saddle, but it IS cattle country and the valley is more or less shaped like a saddle. I am going up there tomorrow.

My sister lived in Ellensberg for many years and never mentioned this tale. I'll have to ask her about it.

No wonder they can't find it. Ellensberg is not in eastern Washington. It is on the east side of the Cascades but it is very much on the western side of the state. Someone alert the search party! lol

Well, I was referring to its geographic location but if you mean the Microsoft/Amazon types think of it as “eastern” WA I believe you. Looking at a map is probably not in their repertoire.

Ellensburg is cattle/wheat country...they do have a big rodeo every year....

but Ellensburg is also known for its unique "Ellensburg Blue" gemstone found in the area, and only in the area.....it's discovered by farmers as they till their fields and I understand it can be quite lucrative....supposed to be one of the hardest stones next to diamonds...

The demarcation between eastern and western WA and OR, culturally, demographically, politically, climatically, geologically, anything you can think of, has always been the north-south Cascade range, even though the range does not lie equidistant from the western (Pacific) and eastern borders of the states.

No wheat to speak of in the Ellensburg/Kittitas valley but plenty in southeastern WA and the Palouse area.

Are these stories things you have witnessed, or just stories that others have heard? I always find stories of the supernatural, ufos, etc. interesting and while skeptical, try to keep an open mind. (I miss Art Bell!)

Isn’t this the area where the UFO folks and dream travelers and other such folks have a semi-permanent camp set up and look for UFO’s near Mount Adams?

It is indeed cattle country (although not as much as in the past). Still have angus and other breeds as well as beefalo out here. I’m not sure if the saddle is named after the town or not, but it sounds likely.
