The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted ammonium hydroxide status as a GRAS, or Generally Recognized as Safe, substance in 1974.
Ammonium hydroxide is also an acceptable ingredient under the conditions of "good manufacturing practices" in dozens of foods, from soft drinks to soups to canned vegetables, according to the General Standards for Food Additives set forth by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a group funded by the World Health Organization and the United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organization.
A trip to the grocery store revealed ammonium chloride - a salt - present in Wonder Bread and Chef Boyardee Mini Ravioli, made by ConAgra Foods. Ammonium phosphate, another type of salt, is listed on Chips Ahoy cookies.
But ammonium hydroxide, the chemical often used to sanitize the "pink slime," was harder to find.
That is because it is often considered a "processing aid," which is not required by U.S. regulators to be included on food labels.
"If it helps facilitate a process, it's not required and (if) it's used at a percent less than 1 percent, it doesn't have to be declared on the label," said Roger Clemens, president of the Institute of Food Technologists and chief scientific officer of E.T. Horn Co, a private chemical and ingredient company.
He said ammonia in food is now being used less than before, as replacement products gain popularity.
When asked if their products were made with ammonium hydroxide, Sara Lee Corp, Hormel Foods, Kellogg and ConAgra said they were not.

I was listening to Schnitt (a local radio host) last week.
They were trying to get to the bottom of the “pink slime” business and they asked for the name of the best expert in the meat industry they could find. They got in touch with this guy on the phone (David Theno), and he said the reporter who was covering it for ABC had also called him, and was asking him about the product for the ABC news story.
Halfway through the interview, the ABC reporter Jim Avila hung up on the expert. The expert called him back, and the Avila told him, the expert wasn’t saying what he wanted for his story, and he the expert was just a tool of the food industry. And hung up on him AGAIN.
So Schnitt’s show called Avila, and he hung up on them. I heard later Avila denied it, but when I heard Theno talking about it, I believed him - he seemed unrehearsed and astounded about it. It’s an incredible story, and totally uncovered in the media. I’ve been able to find very little about it, except for a few tweets.
The MSM is a vile propaganda tool, and we need to work as hard as we can by exposing just how biased and agenda driven they are.

Ammonia is harmless in small concentrations.
Meat is protean, protean is poly amino acid. Amino acids are metabolized into ammonia, your body turns excess ammonia into urea to keep the concentration down, you piss out the urea.
This is elementary school biology.
“Pink slime” is not mechanically separated beef. The USDA banned mechanically separated beef from all food products years ago when spongiform encephalitis became a problem. Pink slime is meat and fat trimmings.
Pink slime is high in protean, low in fat. It has a lot of collagen, which turns to gelatin, which is what makes good bbq good. Pink slime is good. Pink slime tastes good. Pink slime is good for you.
If you are against pink slime, then admit you’re easily manipulated by the press.
Now I’m going to griddle some scrapple which, if it is good scrapple, contains a lot of pig face meat. I like it crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Scrapple is basically polenta made with rich, meaty pork gravy. Mmmmmmm.

When you buy “Ammonia” from the store for disinfecting, it is Ammonium Hydroxide, very diluted. The Ammonia escapes in the form of an Ammonia gas, like Clorine gas does from bleach, very diluted Sodium Hypochlorite.
The bad word is not Ammonium Hydroxide. What’re they doing with it and is THAT bad or not.
Take your birth control and abortifacients and then wet your pants over pink slim. Forget about God and worry about your meat’s processing. Backwards. Get the plank out of your eye, forget about the sliver....

I have talked to all the butchers where I buy our meat...none of them use pink slime.
I'm sick to death of the "pink slime" non-scandal. When it's gone, the same people whining about "pink slime" will be wailing that there's no cheaper ground beef available.

I agree, and I wouldn’t feed pink slime to my daughter. I’ve got a freezer full of lovely roasts and steaks for us that I buy when they’re on sale. Meat that’s hitting it’s ‘use by’ date is still perfectly good. I get some really great deals, especially on family packs I break down into smaller freezer portions. I want my daughter to eat good quality, nutritious food, not processed food if I can help it. I concede the Oreo’s and potato chips. I can’t duplicate those very well.
The American farmer is practically regulated to death. What do you mean you can't trust the agencies? You can certainly trust them to increase the cost of food production through over-regulation spurred by people demanding more of the same after they have been stirred up by this type of nonsense.
Americans are unhealthy because they eat too much fatty, sugary, convenience food and don't get enough exercise. It is real easy to avoid most additives... just buy the staples and go to the trouble of prepairing your own meals from scratch. There are also plenty of sources (at least where I live) to get locally grown and butchered meats. Around here it is very easy to buy a grass fed cow off of Craigslist and have the owner deliver it to the butcher of your choice.
Confirmed what I thought from the start, this was a made up issue. Sounded like the ex USDA inspector had never seen sausage being made and got mad.
Sure they do... they make it and stuff it in a casing every time they make beef sausage.
