'Your' Car Won't Be After 2015
The American Spectator ^ | April 25, 2012 | Eric Peters

Mandatory "Event Data Recorders" will even know you're speeding in reverse.

After a certain point, it's not paranoia.

The latest brick in the wall is the predictably named "Moving Ahead For Progress in the 21st Century Act," also known as Senate Bill 1813. (See here for the full text of the bill itself; the relevant section is 31406.) This legislation -- already passed by the Senate and likely to be passed by the House -- will impose a legal requirement that all new cars made beginning with the 2015 models be fitted with so-called Event Data Recorders (EDRs). These are the "black boxes" you may have read about that store data about how you drive -- including whether you wear a seat belt and how fast you drive -- ostensibly for purposes of post-accident investigation.

This bill is HUGE!

( I glanced through it for a while - there’s got to be other stuff buried in there)

I predict lots of broken sensors, and increased used car resale value.

Ever wonder about the reason for “Cash for Clunkers?”

The reps have probably started and invested in a few after market black box repair and reprogram corps already.

If you have a car built in the last several years, chances are it already has the Event Data Recorder. My 2003 4Runner has one, my wife’s old 2003 Camry had one. And her new 2009 Sienna van has one too.

Many manufacturers have been voluntarily adding them. You can find links to see what makes, models and years have them installed.

What I read about them is that they are tied into the airbag systems. Disable the EVR, and you disable the air bags too. I’m sure someone could find a way around that though.

Then they will make it illegal to disable them.

It isn't a Red Barchetta but yeah, I'm a white-haired uncle and I got a country place and a hot car under a tarp in my garage. I ran it the day before yesterday and it still sounds sweet.

We'll be flipping them off before we have to shoot them, I think. The latter is a dirty little job I don't want to leave for my nephew.

Barbara Boxer also put this gem in the same Senate bill 1813:

Forget Travel If You Owe The IRS

You won't be able to travel outside the US.

Should this ever come to pass, I’ll bet politicians will be exempt somehow.

The bill is going to committee where the Rs are jamming the Dems for now.

http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/house/223769-house-votes-to-negotiate-highway-bill-with-senate

Hill.com - “The failure of Rahall’s (Rat) motion [it expedited the Senate bill in the House] leaves open the chance of a House-Senate conference that lasts through June, since funding for federal highway programs expires June 30 under current law.”

What an idiot. He write a long column on the subject of monitoring and does not even mention the mileage-based tolling possibilities...which is the ultimate goal of this system (and supported by a lot of IDIOT conservatives).

Wait until you are pulled over by a cop using one of these new *License Plate Scanner Computer Readers* ...and when the cop is removing your plates, arranging for your car to be towed...while you try to explain that the data in his *system* is wrong. Fun stuff Amerika.

Only WE are on OUR side, anymore; THEY left us many, many years ago.

“mileage based”- another Ray LaHood idea...isn’t he a “republican” ? or is he a former republican...

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/southern-california-area/635403-good-luck-passing-smog.html

Read some of the comments in that thread. A few years ago, I remember CARB saying that they can lower the emission requirements of new cars but can’t change what the requirements were for old cars. (Basically, it’s not fair to try and make a car run lower emissions 20 years later than it had to pass when it was brand new.) I guess they changed their mind. Complete BS,yet typical of CA and Boxcar’s ilk.
