Astronomy Picture of the Day -- Green Flash and Super Moon
NASA ^ | May 10, 2012 | (see photo credit)

Explanation: It was really not about superheroes as on May 6 the much touted Super Moon, the largest Full Moon of 2012, rose over this otherwise peaceful harbor. And no supervillains were present either as boats gently rocked at their moorings near the checkerboard La Perdrix lighthouse on the coast of Brittany, France. But the rise of the Super Moon was preceded by a Green Flash, captured in the first frame of this timelapse video recorded that night. The cropped image of the frame, a two second long exposure, shows the strongly colored flash left of the lighted buoy near picture center. While the Super Moon was enjoyed at locations all around the world, the circumstances that produced the Green Flash were more restrictive. Green flashes for both Sun and Moon are caused by atmospheric refraction enhanced by long, low, sight lines and strong atmospheric temperature gradients often favored by a sea horizon.

I used to look for the green flash all the time when I lived near the ocean, but I never did see one. I saw a whole lot of beautiful sunsets, though.

Thanks for the picture of the flash. It’s nice finally to see one. Great video of the super moon, too!

I always try to remember to look on those rare occasions when I have an unobstructed western horizon, and I never see it. But I did see it twice on a single afternoon flight to San Diego. I don't think I was even looking for the first one. It occurred as the sun set behind a low, sharply defined, dark cloud layer. The layer didn't actually obscure the horizon so I kept watching and sure enough I got to see it again.

Yeah, I’m finally getting my nebulae the way I want them. The secret is to use photos of real storm clouds.

OMGoodness! That’s really neat! You were lucky to see it twice. Sigh...

There’s also the rainbow around the shadow of the plane on the clouds that you can see if the sun is in just the right place.

And the small planes flying “sideways” and sometimes “backward” if you’re on a jet and stare downward out the window at the ground for the whole trip, LOL!

I used to fly back and forth between southern and northern California for a while when Hubby got a job up north.

I notice that sometimes when you see jets flying through the sky you can see the shadow of the aircraft ahead of its trail. Certainly the lighting has everything to do with it. It’s always amazing to see.

It’s Flipper playing with one of those glow in the dark chemical light sticks. What a prankster!

Beautiful photo. I always wondered if the green flash was just a wive’s tale. But my mother finally saw one from her condo on the Gulf in Florida last year. Being a snowbird for 30 years at that point!

I haven’t seen that, but I believe you, LOL! There are so many things to see in the sky. And the lighting is key. “Mr. Sunshine” can be a trickster.

I was lucky enough to see the green flash many times at sea. I would say most of the time I saw it I was using optics of some sorts, either an alidade or binoculars. I don't think the average flash is bright enough to really see without them.

I had to look that up. There isn't much that I have to look up anymore, LOL! Keeps my "looking up" skills sharp, though.

Has everybody seen the flash but me? [giggles]
