Emergency Survival Supplies To Buy Used
Personal Liberty Digest ^ | 10/08/2012 | Peggy Layton

There are all kinds of places to get survival items such as Goodwill Industries, Deseret Industries, thrift shops, estate sales, yard sales, garage sales, fundraisers, pawn shops, flea markets, moving sales and Internet sites such as Craigslist, Half.com, eBay and Amazon.

Every Saturday during the good-weather months, I sneak off in the mornings to see what I can find at the local yard sales. I am always on the lookout for things like camping equipment, sleeping bags, wool blankets, backpacks and medical supplies.

I am also stockpiling emergency supplies, canning supplies, medical supplies, lighting, garden tools, hand tools, fishing equipment, warm winter clothing, bedding, fuel, guns and ammo. Whenever I find a bargain, I add it to my stockpile.

You can find myriad useful survival items at garage sales and thrift stores. I love garage sales, and I always find good stuff — like the time I found a Vitamix for $25 and a Champion Juicer for $50. My last great find was 10 oil lamps still in the package for $3 each; I bought them all.

The following categories include a list of items that can be found secondhand and will save you money.

Two - count ‘em - at least two, manual can openers lest you sit staring blankly at those cans of Beanie Weenies, wishing you could eat ‘em. (Ha! Can openers are probably on your list, but I couldn’t read it all this go around.)

The P-38 and P-51 openers are cheap and easy to carry on a keychain. I always have one with me.

You left out the reminder to duct-tape it together so it doesn’t assault your femoral artery.

You should know how to open a can without a "can opener".

Just a punch and mallet will make short work of any can. Yes, it is not as neat but Martha Stewart is not going to be around to "tisk tisk" your handy work.

The comments are more interesting than the article, IMO. I tend to agree with those who opine that roving bands of gangs will be looting and burglarizing....and murdering.

We have no choice but to try to drive some place else...or stand our ground. I can envision gangs shooting the tires out of vehicles of refugeeing citizens to steal their supplies. It wouldn’t be pretty.

“You left out the reminder to duct-tape it together so it doesn’t assault your femoral artery.”

I offered Johnny a purse to carry the can opener (that's where mine is), and he refused it. Imagine, too macho to carry a woman's purse. Let him bleed to death if he forgets the duct tape. I have P51 openers. Giving them for Christmas presents to friends.

I haven't tried it yet, but I've read that if you rub the end of the can against an abrasive surface, like cinderblock, brick or concrete, you can sand off the thin layer of metal on the bead and the lid will then lift right off.

I wondered about the propensity of so many SHTF-ers toward collecting camping supplies. It’s dawning on me, that they rely on government funding for their incomes and might be unable to make mortgage and rent payments during the austerity phase.
