Suppose that for whatever reason, the United States decided to limit the number of Federal holidays to five...and it's up to you to decide which five they are. Which would you pick? For reference's sake, here's the current list:
New Year's Day
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
President's Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Columbus Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day
If there's a holiday you want that's not on the list, you can pick it.
Full disclosure: I'm stealing the idea from this thread from Democratic Underground:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021495822
The most five most popular holidays at DU are Labor Day at #1 (big shock there), followed by Independence Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving Day, and New Year's Day. Christmas didn't make the cut, coming in at #7. Surprisingly, there wasn't a single vote for Martin Luther King's Birthday...although Election Day was almost as popular Christmas, and there were multiple votes for a Generic Religious Holiday Day as well the various solstices and equinoxes.
They also want to change Columbus Day to the Indigenous Day of Remembrance...
Anyhoo, I'll start it off with my 5 picks:
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day
Obama Supporter’s Choice:
1-Karl Marx Day
2-Fag Day (replace Flag Day)
Blame Someone Else Day
3-Mohammad Day
4-Sanger Day (give a grandparent a eugenic gift cirtificate or your under age daughter a gift cirtificate for an abortion)
5-Give All Your Money to a Poor Democrat Day.
When Obama was elected, I actually heard talk that August 4, his birthday, would eventually become a national holiday as would November 4, the day he was elected.
THANK YOU, and bless you.
Thanksgiving, Xmas, New Year’s, Memorial and Independence Days.
I don’t get it. What motivates this, your hate of the Feds or your hate of holidays? You know it the only way that the hated gummint forces all employers to give you time off on a dozen of Mondays a year. In other countries, which are as productive as we used to be, workers have many more holidays.
Americans live to work, Europeans work to live, it has been said.
It is probable that we would have never seen the Revolutionary War to a successful conclusion without his efforts. And I'll bet 19 out of 20 Americans have never even heard of him. Damn shame.
You know, it’s odd. You hear over and over again how Jews ‘control’ the media and politics and secretly control everything that happens in the world, but you never hear something like this that is actually true. Without his commitment to the Patriot cause, we might still be an English colony.

Thanks ,the problem is government. Government has grown every year at every level. When has government shrunk , what year? never. every year, heck every day legislator heap more laws (Oppression ) on us and our businesses.Government at all levels needs to be scaled back and kept limited. And I think my plan is the only way. We need to spread the word to the common Joe.
This is Obama and the democrats/socialists plan: to grow government so much that no one will be able to create new private businesses and everyone will have to work for the government. They want total power, control over everything, and all of us. If the government owns everything then they have total power. Every year thousands of pages of new government laws and regulations are being heaped upon businesses AND individuals( for example the 3000 pages of Obamacare which already spawned 13,0000 pages of government regulations).Obama needs to be defeated. The media hides every evil thing Obama does. The problem is government. We need to reduce the size of government and repeal the laws that created all this government
See, there you go, succinct.
Presidents' Day - late Feb (honoring dead presidents ONLY)
Memorial/Veterans' Day - May
Independence Day - July
Patriots' Day - Sep 11
Thanksgiving - Nov
I know that's six. I like spreading them through the year with a couple of months in between. Choose holidays that unite us as Americans. Then 4 more floating holidays for religious observances, birthdays, etc.
I would choose Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Christmas, and maybe a Holy Day of Obligation.
New Years Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day
1: Christmas Day even though it is not the actual birth day of our Lord.
2: Thanksgiving, It is always appropriate to thank God for our many blessings.
3: Independence day, For our own personal freedom.
4: Memorial Day, In remembrance of those who died for our freedom.
5: Veterans day, in consideration of the many sacrifices daily by those Vets who did and still do protect us.
Thanksgiving
Christmas
New Years
Independence Day
George Washington’s Birthday
The top 5 Federal holidays, in descending order of popularity:
1. Independence Day
2. Christmas Day
3. Thanksgiving Day
4. Memorial Day
5. Veteran's Day
This matches my picks...!
The next three holidays, all of which were semi-popular, also in descending order:
6. New Year's Day
7. Washington's Birthday
8. Easter/Good Friday
Then, getting 2 votes:
9. Constitution Day
Finally a bunch that only got 1 vote each:
Columbus Day
Ronald Reagan's Birthday
Abraham Lincoln's Birthday
Labor Day
Constitution Day
Armistace Day
Day After Thanksgiving
Free Republic Day
Contributor's Day
Taker's Day
President's Day
Patriot's Day
Interesting contrast with the list on Democratic Underground:
Labor Day is the most popular holiday at DU, it's barely on the radar here. Big surprise. Christmas Day is #2 here, but #7 at DU. President's Day is almost universally replaced with Washington's Birthday at FR, something not seen at DU. Finally, Easter/Good Friday gets a fair amount of votes here, but not a mention at DU.
