In May of 2009 North Korea’s controversial nuclear weapons tests were dismissed by global intelligence agencies as failures due to their low explosive yield. But EMPact America President Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, a former CIA nuclear weapons analyst, had his own assessment. It appears, according to Pry, that while the yield from the nuclear tests was weak with respect to destructive power in terms of the nuclear blast itself, the tests indicated the weapon was “capable of emitting enough gamma rays to disable the electric power grid across most of the lower 48 states.”
It’s been referred to as a “Super-EMP,” or electro-magnetic pulse weapon, something that foreign powers and rogue states have been working on developing for years as a low-cost, low-inventory counter strategy to America’s massive nuclear weapons stockpiles.

Dr. Graham, chair of the 2008 EMP Commission Report To Congress estimates such a nuke 250 miles over Omaha would cause the death of 90% of the US population in only a few months due to severe limitations on the production and distribution of energy and food.
Yes we could then nuke them IF we knew who did it. Iran has put up 3 such satellites at 250 miles high.
Folks, it is only a matter of time now, it is not a question of if. Better buy an extra can of stew today.
The placement would have to be just right and the explosion done at night as the the sun’s rays on the day side thin out the van allen belts displacing the thickest parts to the night side. The curvature of the Earth also would effect which parts get the strongest effects(the center areas) while the edges would get the weakest. Local anomalies would also cause hit or miss effects. One small yield nuke just won’t do it and the placement would have to be just about perfect and timed with the maximum amount of magnetospheric “support” to get any kind of damage at all. A timed equidistant explosion of 3 or 4 devices simultaneously at just the right places in orbit might cause the feared predicted massive damage but a single device won’t, especially since placement is a variable in terms of predictable results!
Considering the devastating results if it worked, it must be nice to be sure. Are you sure enough for me to bet my children’s and grandchildren’s lives?
With no malice may I reminded you that in April 1942 the best minds in Japan considered that a attack on mainland Japan by American forces was impossible. On April 18, 1942 Lieutenant Colonel James “Jimmy” Doolittle proved them wrong.
Honestly, this has to be one of the dumbest articles I’ve read in my lifetime.
I didn’t say there wouldn’t be damage. I just don’t think a single EMP attack could take out the whole of the continent’s electronic infrastructure. The biggest danger we face is our selves and our crumbling national morality with anti Americans in the nooks and crannies of our state and national governing systems all set to take us down! I would have far more fear for your children because our national demoralization.
A people who are strong and united with a good strong sense of who and what they are could survive an EMP! A demoralized disunited nation cannot survive! A nation’s greatest and weakest strengths will always lay with her people!

Say it took out 1/4th of the grid in the heartland of American, what kind of chaos would ensue?? And if that’s all it did if you were the North Koreans wouldn’t you be more than satisfied?
By the way would you mine share your fact based criticism of why the article is so dumb. It would be welcome if you have some expertise and knowledge of the subject matter that could refute that provided in the article, so we could judge the danger on based on facts from both sides.

I'm not saying that the Norks are harmless, but this type of “fear-mongering” gives them way too much credit as far as capabilities go. And I say that from the perspective of general knowledge.
If you agree with this ludicrous statement, please feel free to post any and all technical papers that would tend to back up what I am calling nonsensical and overblown ‘chicken little’ proclamations and I will be happy to share any technical data that I believe will refute such.
Really, do you suspect the Norks have no knowledge of our military's EMP defensive capabilities? Seeing as how they would be quite aware of the extensive “hardening” our mission critical electronics have, they would not be crazy enough, even for Norks, to attempt to lob a nuke or two our way in an attempt to knock out our electrical grid knowing what would be coming their way after such an attempt? Even threatening such an operation would be laughable with their current technology, but it's a given that eventually they will improve their yields to field a nominal threat to our power grid, assuming their schizo rockets could put them at the desired coordinates reliably in the next 10 years.
I say Dr. Peter Vincent Pry is full of shiite, at least at this point in time, concerning their overall capabilities and the reliability of their technology and I do not for a second believe that his statements are the end-all expertise in what is exactly required to “disable” our electrical grid in CONUS.
