National Freedom Day

When : Always February 1st

National Freedom Day celebrates freedom from slavery, and recognizes that America is a symbol of freedom.

National Freedom Day was established in 1948 to remind us that America stands for, and is a symbol of freedom for all people. The roots of this special day come directly from the end of slavery and the signing of the 13th amendment outlawing slavery.

Celebrate this day by reflecting upon your own freedoms that you enjoy by being fortunate enough to be in America. Millions of people in the world are not free.

Origin of National Freedom Day:

Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., a former slave, created National Freedom Day. He believed that there should be a day when freedom for all Americans is celebrated. President Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865. So, February 1st was chosen to celebrate National Freedom Day.

On June 30, 1948, President Harry Truman signed a the bill proclaiming February 1st as National Freedom Day.

The Navy command where I work had a Super Bowl chili contest today.

I won, out of ten entries.

I don't know how, all I did was combine the following:
1 can each of dark red kidney beans, black beans, and Bush's medium chili beans.
2 15.5 oz jars of Tostitos medium salsa
2 lbs of ground beef
2 packages of McCormick regular chili seasoning mix
and a generous sprinkling of ground Cayenne pepper

and let it simmer all morning in the crock pot.

There are as many answers to that question as there are chili cooks. But to add my two cents, chili should NOT contain kidney beans.

There are people here in Texas that would claim that what you are making is not chili simply because it contains beans. Some of these people are way too serious about it and will offer to kick your ass if you don't apologize to the chili gods.

I am NOT one of these people.

<Sigh!> There's one in every crowd.

The proper way to make chili is to stampede a herd of cattle through a colander. What comes out gets cooked. Spice to taste and enjoy.

Honestly, some people!

You can make it

Or you can make it

Just so long as you make it

And make it for dinner tonight!!!
