Like William Buckley, I believe adult use of some drugs should be decriminalized. What say you? Zot!

Posted on 04/26/2013 8:31:00 PM PDT by Mason880

My thought is certain recreational drugs, such as marijuana, should remain off legal limits for the under 18 year olds, but become legally available when used in the proper environment. In many ways, pot is quite similar to alcohol, in that they should be used responsibly. My thought is to make the sale of marijuana less profitable by making it legal for home use. Personally, I don't smoke anything now, and do not want the smell of tobacco or pot on my clothes should I visit a public place, such as a shopping mall or bus stop. I know this idea has been kicked around for years, and hasn't really gained traction. My concern is, even if pot was declared legal and open for adult use, how would those newly arrived Mexcian gangs deal with this market loss? Would they end up trying to raid, ruin and close down any public seller of these formerly illegal substances? I think for the first few years, there may be such push back and attempts at intimidation by those losing business to the open market. Its' not really my fight anymore, but, so many cities say they are inching toward bankruptcy, this new open market may help to boost city funds. Yes, it would be a bold step in the cold, deep waters of chance. But it may work. We go rid of prohibition of alcohol, and the country survived the gang's angry wrath back then too.

I hope I don’t get in another big back and forth argument with a Libertarian, but since you asked,

no, I don’t think recreational drugs should be legal, because they, to a smaller or greater degree, lower your inhibitions, make you irrational, make you comatose, actually deliver brain damage, make you stupid, make you paranoid, and decrease your motor skills. When you commit crime, or lose your mind, we have to pick up the pieces. It is morally wrong to deliberately make yourself more likely to indulge in criminal behavior, and it is morally wrong to deliberately make yourself more likely to become insane or useless.

yes, I know that daily pot use will do far less damage than daily meth use. I realize it is a matter of degree.

yes, I know there are supposed to be a few people who get high all the time and still apparently are doing well. The exception doesn’t make the rule.

no, I don’t want to wait until the rape or the neglect or the accident or the murder or the robbery, and then arrest the drug abuser. I in fact think we should make it illegal to make ourselves irrational, comatose, hallucinatory, and/or stupid. Like we arrest drunk drivers before they cause an accident. I think that’s the right thing to do.

no, I don’t think alcohol should be illegal, and that’s not because I drink, because I don’t care for it. Alcohol is the ONLY drug, if used in moderation, which does not do any of the above and can actually benefit your health. I don’t think drunkenness should be legal, and I’ll put .10 blood alcohol as where I’d put the legal limit.

no, people don’t use other drugs in moderation. It’s theoretically possible to take one hit of marijuana or one grain of cocaine, but nobody does that, and I get irritated trying to pretend they do. Whereas people have a glass or two of wine, or a beer or two, routinely.

yes, if there is an actual medical purpose to a drug, like meth for 24 hour fliers in combat or pot for glaucoma sufferers, I’d support it (prescribed) if the benefits outweigh the risks.

Anyone who thinks otherwise, answer me this, would you leave your three year old with a babysitter who is snorting coke, or shooting heroin, or sucking on a bong? No you would not. Because you know better. Whereas you’d leave her with a babysitter who is having a glass of wine with her dinner. Because you know that’s fine.

I think you’ve already seen some good responses. What do you do about DUIs on marijuana (they’re already dealing with that in Colorado and Washington)? What do you do about juveniles getting high and being stupid off older peeps stash? ... In case you don’t know, there are a LOT of pot using peeps who don’t just sit around and get stoned ...

Bingo. The solution to many ills involves taking away that which makes wrongful behavior comfortable & profitable, and recognizing no solution will be without its flaws. Respect a person’s freedom to fail - and fail hard. Respect citizen’s duty to care for each other - without legislating a gun to someone else’s head and saying “you deal with it”.

So if you want to flush yourself down the toilet, it shouldn’t be on my dime.

Ah, but that's the problem. It most certainly will be on your dime, and nothing will change that, now or in the future.

As for me, I lean towards the Singapore solution.

We have either given up everything once we’ve done that or we should give up. You think it’s bad now.

William F. Buckley is dead. William F. Buckley also believed that the Soviets, by targeting American educational institutions demonstrated, didn’t understand how America works.

Prohibition brings crime. I think ending prohibition takes the money out of the drug trade.

Bull crap. On all accounts. Prohibition did work and that commie fdr ended it to destroy America. Weed use will increase and if you dont believe that, youve never been around pot smokers.

Yes, Legalize pot for 21 and over. By all means tax it. Then let the Marijuana offenders in Jail out. Far too much money is spent and thus the source of corruption in our police and politicians because of the amount of money spent.

Marijuana should be treated much like alcohol as far as home use is concerned. I would rather not have people driving while stoned so don’t make it available in bars and night clubs or gas stations for that matter.

Bring back hemp farming (hemp grown for fiber is a terrible smoke)

You may change your tune if you are ever afflicted with chronic pain or bad arthritis. I certainly don't need a nanny government telling me I can't relieve it, or making it next to impossible for doctors to help me.

And my liver would be a lot better off if I could ease the pain with pot instead of what the nanny government "allows" the doctor to perscribe.
