Has the plug been pulled out of the Atlantic? Crack on Earth's crust...
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 20 June 2013 | Nicola Rowe

Posted on 06/20/2013 9:50:36 PM PDT by SunkenCiv

Scientists have discovered a crack in the Earth's crust that threatens to pull North America and Europe closer together and cause the Atlantic Ocean to vanish in about 220 million years.

Researchers at the University of Lisbon have created a new map of the seafloor, off the coast of Iberia -- the region of Europe that includes Portugal and Spain -- and the results show the beginnings of a new subduction zone.

National Geographic reported on the new data surrounding the subduction zones, and what could happen when the tectonic plates -- the large rock slabs that make up the Earth's crust -- crash into one another.

Full title: Has the plug been pulled out of the Atlantic? Crack on Earth's crust could make ocean DISAPPEAR - and pull Europe and North America together.
If the Eurasian plate cracks, the oceanic section will dive beneath the continental section causing the Atlantic Ocean to shrink and pull North America and Iberia closer together

Has the plug been pulled out of the Atlantic?

I, for one, aren’t too concerned about 220 years from now. I don’t believe I’ll be around.

We can solve this. I propose we break California off and tow it to the Atlantic and sink it over the crack.

Perhaps we can sell AlGore on the idea?

....I think the article says: "and cause the Atlantic Ocean to vanish in about 220 million years"

so don't sweat a couple of centuries.

Better get out the super caulking gun. Our separation with Europe needs to be increasing, not decreasing!

Someone better tell Al Gore. He says the east coast of the American continent will be under water from ice cap melting and climate change flooding. So one fear-monger predicts flooding by the Atlantic; another doom and gloom report says the Atlantic will fall into a crack and disappear (who knows where it will go). Take your pick if you want to worry.

Maybe. But to create, one must first destroy. Which is why God created the virus.

I guess the same magic machine that would break California off from the continent could also shrink it so it go pass through the Panama Canal./s

I thought that the mid-Atlantic rift (the one responsible for volcanoes in Iceland, the Canary Islands, etc) was actually pushing the continents apart and widening the Atlantic. How is this new fault line interacting with the existing, active rift that’s in the middle of the Atlantic?

This reminds me of a movie seen in Grade school/Jr high (in the 1950/60)

With more and more oil taken out of our planet Earth, the orb begins to crack. Seem to remember a plan to blow up dams to fill the cracks. Then the movie plot dims and don’t remember the end or who might have been in the film. Does anyone remember this movie? No, not CRACK IN THE EARTH, no mention of lack of oil/liquid being the reason given, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Just asking. Wondered about this for years now and thought some here might know. TIA

Hank Johnson is available to consult on this project. He'll suggest moving the Sierra Nevada into the San Joaquin Valley so the state doesn't capsize in transit.
