San Francisco 777 Crash: Why Did So Many Passengers Evacuate With Bags?

When seconds can mean the difference between life and death in escaping an aircraft accident, it was startling to see so many photographs from the crash of Asiana Flight 214 at San Francisco International Airport of people carrying out bags, including roll aboards that must have come out of the overhead luggage bins. At least one man interviewed in the New York Times indicated that he grabbed his bags and then his child. In that order. All I can say is that it was very fortunate that the fire was slow to spread.

Never charged for checks bag..really?

Ive been doing ALOT of flying of late for work
The rule is domestic $25 per check bag (but not jet blue)..international is first check bag is free

The problem is they do lose check bag had on lost twice bween connection flights ..and you do not get access to check bag on long layover or delays...had a connecting flight delayed 15 hours..got put up in hotel but no access to bag..so from 10 am fri went I left to airport till at my final hotel was 36 hours in same clothes

I check one large bag..and always have one small carryon

If you look at the photos all the overhead bins blew open and emptied their contents during the crash.

Everybody is ignorant except you.

You would never act like those other people.

OK let me re-qualify me statement- if there is a fire and people are waiting behind you, then you DONT grab your bag while people are screaming and being burned to death

But apparently the people on this plane thought they had time to, so they did

Yes, abandon to drown the being that sleeps at your feet, or on your shoulders, who has given you unconditional love and is totally dependent upon you for survival.

I pity the life you have had that could lead you to think this way.

That is what I was thinking. If I had to wait to get out, I would have at least pulled out my wallet if not whole purse to go with me.

Anyone who has ever traveled anywhere near Chinese tourists is unsurprised.

The new “ugly American” is a pushy, me-first, entitled Chinese tourist. They make the Germans seem like Thai monks.

This has got to be one of the silliest “All Americans are Selfish Bastards” threads I’ve ever seen on FR! And I’ve seen a lot!

If you don’t care enough to save your pets lives then you shouldn’t have pets.

People grabbing the bag with their passports and laptops seem a perfectly normal reaction.

I know the fire say “leave everything” but most people are going to grab irreplaceable stuff on the way.

Stupid ain’t the word for those ridiculing the passengers or flood victims;but super judgmental and inflated sense of importance might be a start.

If you have time to get to the bag why not? I probably would have just jumped off with my purse but who knows what the situation was from moment to moment.

I wondered the same thing. I told my wife that I would have kicked the ass of anyone who delayed my exit.

Kicked. Their. Ass.

...why not grab your bag...

Because someone like me will be behind you...and lay you out so quickly and so hard that you'll burn in the fire.

Is your laptop worth it?

If I were the King of Airlines carry on luggage would be banned.

Gotcha. You work for the airlines so baggage is now viewed as a revenue stream.

many passengers were trapped by their seabelts and the crew was begging for knives.

granpa’s apple knife would have been useful. Unfortunatly the unionists are scared of passengers/cattle.

Luggage is already a revenue stream whether you like it or not. My preference would be for free checked luggage, with big fees for carry-ons.

not to mention the theft, and risk of smugglers using innocent bags.

I’ll tell you why... To hear the media talk about the accident you’d think it was a Disney ride. Whenver you depart the ride, you should always check for your belongings. More seriously, if there didn’t seem to be much danger AND I was not hampering others to depart or I was the last AND I could easily spot and take my bag, I would. You will NEVER get it again.
