Feds tell Web firms to turn over user account passwords
CNET ^ | July 25 2013 | by Declan McCullagh

The U.S. government has demanded that major Internet companies divulge users' stored passwords, according to two industry sources familiar with these orders, which represent an escalation in surveillance techniques that has not previously been disclosed.

If the government is able to determine a person's password, which is typically stored in encrypted form, the credential could be used to log in to an account to peruse confidential correspondence or even impersonate the user. Obtaining it also would aid in deciphering encrypted devices in situations where passwords are reused.

if they can do this there’s no way to prove what’s in your account was created by you.

they can set you up for any crime they want and then storm your house gestapo swat style.

Just the fact that this is now public means defense attorneys will use this to raise reasonable doubt.

Technically complex cases are already hard to prosecute and this makes it harder.

Already there have been cases where prosecutors failed to convict because there was a trojan contained in the image of the hard disks entered as evidence. The operator of the trojan could easily have been responsible for data on the disk.

The Fourth Amendment states (not that King Zero and his merry band of Constitution shredders care):

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated....

"Effects" must be read, in conjunction with "papers",as to include electronic devices. Without a warrant, it is illegal to demand passwords. None but a bought and paid for judge would sign such a warrant, but I reckon there are quite a few just in DC that would do so without as much as a second thought. Anything to advance King Zero's destruction of America.

The Constitution is now interpreted by Leftists as a document that only allows the people what is specifically written (subject to interpretation by Leftist judges) and the government is only restricted by what they can't reinterpret from the document.

remember that trayvon’s texts couldn’t be entered as evidence because the judge could not be sure he was the one that typed and sent them, on his own phone.

...or even impersonate the user...

Pretty much blows the concept of nonrepudiation.

Wouldn't this allow someone accused by the government of a computer crime to plausibly claim "It wasn't me"?

I've been thinking the same thing since this (non-phony) scandal first broke.

If the USPS were smart, they could build an awesome advertising campaign around this.

The Postal Service takes photos of the front of every piece of mail and stores them in a database, which is accessible to both local and federal law enforcement agencies.

Your reference to banking is related to my initial thought about the reach of this. Sounds like this move would put everyone’s bank accounts at the disposal of the government.

Yes, it seem that way, and many people will say that it is nothing but rumor, but rumor can be for the purpose of getting every one used to the idea and then when it becomes fact their battle is won.

So many things over the years have happened just that way.

1. Set you up for a crime you did not do.
2.Empty your Bank Account
3.In short it is the ability to destroy you and imprison you.

Had enough?

If this complicit Congress allows the central socialist government to get away with this then the government needs to be turned upside down, shaken and the little weasels rounded up and assigned a large rock pile to break up.

American Conservatives are at war with this evil regime.

Don’t forget what Bozo said in a recent speech: If you distrust or dislike your government then we’ll have trouble.

The U.S. government has demanded that major Internet companies divulge users' stored passwords....who exactly is making this demand? That person will have to go to court as all passwords or most are under contractual agreement and are not available to anyone....how do we know this demand is not from some foreign entity? The American Government does not have this right, unless they have declared war on Americans.

Go back in time and read some of the stuff the Russians said. They said the way to defeat the USA was from the inside.

They were hoping to spark a race war in the 60s, but the peaceful marches and hope of even more progress, strength of the churches, and people’s belief in working within the system all contributed to the failure of that effort. Americans were turned off by the violent words and actions of some of the black power groups.

They also had a slower plan involving the entertainment, educational, and political system as well as reducing the strength of the Churches and Christianity.

They have been joined by other groups such as La Raza, and the ROP fanatics. Congress Critters??? Some are just greedy and self-centered. Some are convinced that socialism and communism are best. Some are proof that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I doubt that there are very many people in Congress, that really understand the constitution, and the relationship between the people and government that must exist for free market capitalism to work and allow for people to move up the economic ladder. Nor do they understand the true value of property rights. Maybe 5 people total from the Senate and House understand the real consequences.

We are at a point that what needs to be done will likely mean political suicide, and so most are not willing to stick their necks out.

The left did not make its gains overnight, after Reagan, if we had continued the march back, I think we would be better off, but we didn’t, instead the gains were erased, even though every one tried to pretend to be a Reagan standard bearer.

We all know that socialism will eventually crash, and it appears that time is pretty close. Who knows what will finally happen? Either Congress enacts sensible policies or they don’t and nature takes its course.
