100,000 sign up for one-way ticket to Mars

More than 100,000 people around the world have applied to be the first to make a one-way trip to Mars, according to organisers of a prospective mission.

The private Dutch-based Mars One project is proposing to select a group of 40 would-be civilian astronauts this year, aiming to send four of them on a no-return journey to to the red planet in 2022.

Experts have questioned both the financial and practical viability of the mission, but that hasn't stopped people signing up in droves, including 30,000 Americans, CNN reported.

The estimated cost for the initial mission is $6 billion (£3.87 billion) which Mars One hopes to raise through sponsors and selling broadcasting rights to media companies, including a reality show of the colonisation project.

It hopes to send a second group of four people to Mars a few years after the first. None of them will return to Earth. Before leaving the astronauts would train for eight years, learning medical and survival skills.

Thank God! :)

Its no Eden.

Did you ever see “Without Warning” a tv movie that a lot of morons thought was real (it’s presented as breaking news about strange occurrings eventually revealed to involve aliens who the government pisses off into destroying the world). The whole thing is on you tube but he’s the end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0XuP1efXG8

Why that old reporter decides to spend his last moments quoting Shakespeare to his soon to be dead viewers, rather than trying to get into Jane Kaczmarek’s pants, I’ll never understand. This was pre-viagra, I guess that explains it.

“Why would anyone want procreation on Mars anyway?”

Why to attempt to breed 3 boobed daughters of course, why else?! ;D

Never saw it. But it looks fake.

You remember 1970s movie Capricorn I ?
After the military realizes too late that the ship life support will fail in space they decide to fake the trip to Mars on TV to keep the program from being canceled.

That was a fun conspiracy film. OJ was an astronaut in it, Jim Brolin starred.

I am doubtful that a ship will even be built that can take humans all the way to Mars keeping them alive, let alone them surviving there.

Notice no men have landed on the Moon since US mid 70s.

You bring up some valid points ... However, every trailblazing expedition needs those intimately familiar with such inhospitable environments (as she’s *clearly* stated) to search for raw materials, draw off (scare off?) Alien threats, etc.

For some reason, the old movie “Robinson Crusoe On Mars” comes to mind...

Cool Martian space ships...

Capriocrn 1, never heard of it, which is odd with that cast. It probably helped fuel those moon landing conspiracy theories.

“Notice no men have landed on the Moon since US mid 70s.”

And the next one will probably be Chinese.

Cable TV first came to home town in 1976 when I lived with parents and mine got HBO right off and I still remember seeing most movies like this I saw on it while living there as it was such a novel seeming idea at time.
Fun conspiracy movie with good cast, plenty of CTs here since Obama. If we landed on Mars now (not possible) you can bet this one would be floating around here.

Capricorn One is a 1978 American thriller movie about a Mars landing hoax

At an unspecified time,[2] Capricorn One—the first manned mission to Mars—is on the launch pad. Such NASA authorities as Dr. James Kelloway (Hal Holbrook) realize, too late, that a faulty life-support system supplied by a corrupt NASA contractor will kill the astronauts during the flight. As the manned space program needs a success to continue, they find themselves forced to falsify the landing rather than cancel the mission.

Minutes before launch, the bewildered crew of Air Force Colonel Charles Brubaker (James Brolin), Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Peter Willis (Sam Waterston), and Navy Commander John Walker (O. J. Simpson) are removed from Capricorn One and flown to an abandoned United States Army Air Corps desert base. The launch proceeds on schedule, but the public is unaware that the spacecraft is empty. At the base, the astronauts are informed they will help counterfeit the television footage during the flight to and from Mars, and that it is their patriotic duty to participate for the sake of national morale and prestige. Initially they refuse, but Kelloway, himself under extreme duress (from whom, what, or where is never clearly specified) to go through with the hoax, threatens their families if they do not cooperate, claiming a bomb will explode on a plane carrying the family members.

Does anyone remember this?:

I have a couple vague memories of it.

That’s before Impy’s time. I have the vaguest recollection, but whether I watched it is another story. I see it had the dad from “Silver Spoons” in it (Joel Higgins).

HA!

I thought, before I looked it up, that Michael “oral sex is the culprit” Douglas was in it. But it was the dad from Silver Spoons (Erin Gray - YES!!!).

I think it used to come on after Mork & Mindy on ABC.

Since I watched M&M in primetime, I must’ve seen it. I was reading recently about M&M and was shocked how fast it plummeted in the ratings after its first season. I still stuck with it through Jonathan Winters. If Robin Williams hadn’t swiftly gotten into films at that point, his career would’ve been a flash in the pan (like poor Pam Dawber’s was for the most part).

Ah yes, “Mearth”. One of the rules of “jumping the shark”: introducing a new kid into the mix...

Robin Williams “sold high” for sure.

Yes, since it followed M&M, that’s how I must have watched it (or parts of episodes).

It was already dropping to the bottom before Winters came on the scene. I thought he was a hoot, but I didn’t realize he was really slumming it. Of course, it’s amazing that drugs didn’t destroy Williams’ career early on. Perhaps there was a double standard for male actors... they could look the other way (and let’s face it, M&M was a kid’s show, which made it even worse), yet if it was an actress... poor Lauren Tewes got kicked to the curb and never recovered her career.

“...poor Lauren Tewes...” You carry her torch. Wow...

“It was already dropping to the bottom before Winters came on the scene.” Yeah, he was the final anvil tossed on the sinking lifeboat.

A failed Andy Griffith project? Ha.

Speaking of Robin Williams I was surprised to learn he’s returning to TV in some new sitcom.

He also plays Ike in that new movie “The Butler”. Robin Williams as Ike and Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan. Yeah.

“A failed Andy Griffith project? Ha.”

Yeah, my Mom hated his guts after he came out so loud and proud as a RAT. Decades of fandom ended quickly.

Although, I'm sure ole Andy will continue voting RAT for the next, say, 30-40 years.

“Robin Williams as Ike and Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan.”

Williams would make me want to gag; the other one would make me want to piss on the TV. Still surprised a Vietnam Vet hasn't taken her out yet. Her and George Soros must have uncanny, cockroach-like survival skills.

All the Nam guys are a little long in the tooth by now, she’s probably safe from them.

Her ex-husband John Vardem forced her to have lesbian sex for his viewing pleasure, so there’s that.
