There are plenty of squirrels, chipmunks, skunks, deer and such around...I put out a bowl of food for the neighborhood cats, and they keep any and all potential garden pests at a distance.
With Tomatoes and Corn, there’s not much else to need or want.LOL
We don’t have neighbor hood cats. Plenty of ferral cats though, and I see them dragging off a squirrel every now and again.LOL
LOL...how true. I really miss my peach trees, though. I didn’t plant dwarfs and they got WAY too big. One year an enormous branch broke off because I hadn’t thinned the fruit enough. Finally took out the peach trees and my sole plum tree died. I sure miss that tree-ripened stone fruit.

Yep. We are working on it. About 2 weeks should get some more test results and then we’ll see if the treatment works.

Nice looking family. And some people complain a coon or woodchuck raiding the garden.
What’s the difference between Painted Hill and Painted Mountain(s)?
I’m thinking of growing the latter next year.
Yup; 3 cubs. But #3 is standing between the other 2, at Mama Bear’s rear, facing us & looking down at the ground. You can see the brown of its snout just behind her right front leg. You can see the ears, too; they’re just above & on each side fo the brown of the muzzle, and are a darker black.

No idea what the difference is; I never heard of Painted Mountain; only saw Painted Hill last year, so tried it. This year’s is from saved seed grown last year.
Now I have to go look it up, because I have some cat genes my parents incorporated into their basement cloning experiments.

Painted Hill
Beautiful multi-colored sweet corn. Developed by plant breeder Alan Kapuler for cooler and shorter season climates. Open pollinated and stabilized cross between Painted Mountain and Luther Hill. Each ear is about seven inches and multi colored. Some plants in this selection also produce multiple stalks with more ears!
Mine sure does! It's usable as table corn, once the ears fill out, but before they start to take on the colors.
Well, at least there is some good news on the gardening thread, and even the bad news (sicklly squash, critters raiding gardens, no rain, too much rain) isn't as horrifying as the news articles on FR these days..
Bumper “crop” of bear cubs here in VA .... the Wildlife Center of Va had 19 at one point .... only have 16 cubs now. The cubs, all orphaned, unable to keep up with mom, injured, etc. will be released back into the wild in January. In the meanwhile, they provide plenty of entertainment on the ‘critter cam’. I have to get some training at a conference for the non profit organization I work with. Was last there about 6 years ago and it wasn’t too bad.
Kinda scary to go now though. I plan to stick close to the hotel and won’t go out after dark at all. Too bad they don’t let you carry mace or pepper spray on airplanes-it would at least make me feel better.
Should have some stuff about how to prepare for Obama Care rules.
Good points. I just kinda read the headlines, say a little prayer and put the blinders on. Just so much a person can take.
The more calculations I run concerning the idea of starting my own seed business, the better it looks. But then, right now all I have are calculations, my seeds aren’t ready to sell yet. Maybe this fall I’ll be able to do a test run with one of my tomato varieties, I have a jar of seeds in the fridge waiting for me to finish cleaning them.
Last week I picked a few baby ears of corn because the stalks they were on had been broken off. The ears were a bit big for baby corn, but too small for sweet corn. Kindergarten corn, perhaps? Anyway, I have a review. They are unbelievable at that stage! Like sweet corn x10! I sliced one into medalions and stir-fried it in butter, along with some leftover beef and a few tomatoes. The cob was pleasantly crunchy, not woody, and the flavor was amazing. After I expand my seed several times over, I might reserve a few rows just to pick like that!
My grape tomatoes are ripening by the handfulls now, and a few of my slicers are ripe. But, the slicers have been chewed on by something. There were so many holes and bad spots on the first 2 that I just chopped one up for seed. The other had a few salvagable spots, so as I was getting the seeds out, I threw the nicer chunks in with some spaghetti sauce that was cooking. De-lish!
My potatoes need hilling again. I was promished some stuff to mulch/hill them with, but when I opened it today it was moldy. Back to using lawn clippings and hoping they dry out before they rot.
I have 6 large white cucumber “eggs” ripening for seed. They’re almost the size of melons. I’ve been assuming they’ll slip from the stem when ripe, like melons do, but I’ll admit I haven’t looked that up yet.
Hopefully I’ll get out to the land tomorrow. I could use the sanity break. It was bad enough when it was just my coworkers acting like spoiled toddlers, but now one of the new guys is getting too touchy and stands in my personal space when I’m trying to work. Makes my skin crawl. I don’t like being a whiner, but I do need to be able to see my computer screen without his enormous gut in the way! Had to ask someone with a voice to warn him to back off, I’m mute and he was ignoring my sign on the wall. There are 3 girls in my office who look like supermodels, why do I have to deal with the creeps?!
It just occurred to me, did anyone warn you that that squash is a rambler? It can be trained to climb, but it really prefers to send vines out all over the place. When they get long it might be harder to move your barrel.
