Guest column: How my uncle sent McCartney a meat message (Served meat to road crew at show)

My Uncle Duncan was among those who drove down to Regina for the Paul McCartney concert. When I saw him three days later, he still was jacked up.

“I haven’t had such a good time since my Scottish distillery tour in 1973,” he pronounced. This was high praise indeed. The last leg of Uncle Duncan’s 1973 Scottish distillery tour was a police escort to the airport.

The funny thing now was that Uncle Duncan, as far as I knew, is not a big McCartney fan. He never has paid much attention to popular music, except to ask that it be turned down or, better still, off.

What had possessed him, then, to go to the McCartney concert? “It was to fight injustice,” he said.

It all started with a disturbing news report. Aside from being a celebrated entertainer, McCartney is a militant vegetarian and animal rights crusader. So devoted is he that his roadies on this tour reportedly are served exclusively vegetarian fare.

Uncle Duncan, when he learned of this, was aghast.

“McCartney can eat as much tofu as he likes,” said Uncle Duncan, “but he shouldn’t force it down other people’s throats.”

He could not let this stand. After a trip to the grocery store for supplies, Uncle Duncan made 12 loaves of baloney sandwiches, with mustard, lettuce and, not one, but two slices of Schneider’s baloney in every sandwich. These he packed into a large cardboard box and transported to Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

He got into the stadium simply by claiming he was here with the sandwiches.

The attendant security guards were only too happy to partake. Once inside, Uncle Duncan distributed baloney sandwiches backstage to everyone wearing a tour T-shirt.

“They heard free baloney sandwiches and they swarmed me,” Uncle Duncan recalled.

Not much on baloney, but frying it is an upgrade.

Outstanding and brilliant. Freedom personified. And since he didn’t sell the sandwiches and their own security let him in— bravo. Dear Paul will probably hassle his crew though— might be on contract in which case, he might have cancelled through the promoter, but didn’t find out til later.

Annoying militant vegetarians. Quote” I didn’t claw my way to the top of the food pyramid to be a vegetarian”.

Personally I’ve always wished Mark Chapman had been jealous of McCartney instead of Lennon, but that’s just me.

Personally, I wished he'd used some of those bullets on Yoko. She was standing right next to him, after all.

Honestly... the women is a disaster. Rich kid daughter of a jap banker. A hanger on, a doper and zero... pure zero talent of any kind. But especially NOT a singer— fingernails on a blackboard.

And Lennon supported Reagan— many lefties don’t know that.

I have long had a suspicion that Yoko was in on it with Chapman.....Was John on the verge of leaving her? Was John having a change of heart, politically at the time? Who stood to gain the most from his death?

I don’t have any proof, but the fact Chapman spared her, does raise some of those questions.

In the meantime, Sir Paul remains in critical condition at the Regina Municipal Hospital. Doctors’ prognoses are cautious.

One season of Top Chef had the contestants cooking Thanksgiving dinner for some rock group (name forgotten).

I was surprised at the picayune BS in the contract riders, including taking care of the vegans in the entourage.

In a perfect world Yoko would have stepped in front of John.
