Cash Back on EBT Cards
10-07-2013 | Self

Posted on 10/07/2013 12:05:01 PM PDT by Captain Peter Blood

I was in Walmart the other night and saw something I did not know was available. As I was standing in the checkout line a woman was using her Food Stamp EBT card to buy stuff and at the end of the transaction she was able to get money back on the EBT card like you can with a debit card. I enquired about this and was informed that a change had been made by Government that permitted this. So you can get a cash back on a EBT Card then are able to buy things not on the approved list like tobacco products and alcohol. So another reason for me to hate paying my taxes.

No, I didn’t say anything. He’s an old man and he’s lived next door for longer than the 15 years we’ve been here. It’s not worth the hard feelings, and he wouldn’t understand anyway. This man inherited the house he’s in. Can’t read or write. And too he’s a very nice old man. I just don’t have the heart to demean him to his face.

That said, I completely understand how you feel. You wife should be proud!

It’s about $20, which doesn’t go far to buy toilet paper, much less gambling in a casino.

Again, what about soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, laundry detergent - none of which can be purchased with ebt food - the cash is for that.

Yes, many programs like the EBT or Texas Lone Star Card allow the user to get cash back. I posted a reply some months ago about a customer in a food mart getting back $50 cash, put the two bags of groceries in her car and walked two doors down to the liquor store. I watched and she came out with a bottle of booze. Pissed me off.

Well I used to joke that: Use your EBT card to post bail.

Probably not a joke anymore.

Fortunately, I have never heard the song to which you refer...

pity.

No - I don’t want a link... :)

For food stamps, there should be a special store just for them. Staples only, beans, fruit, vegetables, meat, rice, bread, milk, juice, etc. No processed foods, no premade frozen dinners...

You'll find that the main impediment to doing that, and it is a formidable one, are the huge multinational food manufacturers, distributors and grocers. It is not the recipients -- they would adapt. But the slightest suggestion that food product types should be restricted instantly brings a deluge of lobbyists to D.C., many with existing connections to USDA senators and representatives. This kind of reform isn't going to happen any time soon.

Didn’t happen - not from the SNAP side.

Good post.
EBT has become such a large % of food purchases that the retailers are now part of the supporting lobby.

What an irony. As some of you all know I have been unemployed and have been sending out resumes in and out. So far I only had gotten 1 interview..sigh. Anyway I have come to an end I won’t be able to pay rent. So I had no choice but to apply for food stamps and for General Assistance.

So today I went for an orientation as I sat there I was sitting next to a standing Sheriff and this gentlemen which they were conversing. They were talking about the poltics in California. The Sheriff says “thanks to the Liberal media, they are protecting the political crap that is going on”. I thought WOW a sheriff who hate liberals LOL. Also they talked about the Raiders coming to Concord. The sheriff says if they are moving in, Im moving out LOL.

Then a few minutes later, in comes this dude with a funny hat on him kinda like the pic of ODumbo wore in that pic of him wearing that funny costume. Then came after him a woman with a stroller. WHOA!!!!! She was all in a burka - I kid you not. I thought it was Halloween already. I wanted to burst out laughing but I held it in. I felt I was living in the Middle East. Everyone including Hispanics were just like WTF!!! but they tried not to keep staring at her. So I went to the 10min orientation and we were to return to the lobby in which they will call our name and we were given our next appointment to meet our case worker. So when my name was called I got up and boom almost ran into the Burka Lady and her stroller and I was expecting a foreign accent. Nope she had a clear English vocabulary. I though “O sheesh must be one of those liberal woman who got seduce into Islam over diversity”.

What a day today was. I just hope and pray I find a job soon I hate being under government teat. May I request prayers that God allow me to find a job so I may become self-reliant again.

More info on TANF here.

It's a program that offers direct cash payments (via an EBT card) to beneficiaries.

As you might expect, this program is very abused and defrauded.

If you aren't pissed off enough yet, go check out the FI program, another direct cash payment to beneficiaries. Note that this is a state program financed by the Feds. That link is for South Carolina, but most states are the same. Another program that is stuffed full of fraud.

A friend who is an employed teacher and the spouse who is an employed nurse went to the SNAP website and input their incomes... they were eligible for $25 a month in assistance!!

It seems to me that the threshold for need is pretty crazy if you can be gainfully employed and still qualify for assistance.

That’s quite a discrepancy from my state where a family of four is not going to see any SNAP benefits with a family income above the mid-30,000s.

In this area a teacher and nurse would be expected to have a combined income of over $100,000. No way would they qualify for SNAP.

I would go to the federal SNAP benefit calculator to verify that but, of course, it is closed lol.

Hasn't welfare always offered direct cash payments to recipients? What else would it be?

I hope you added a “you are welcome” as you walked off. I always do and my wife fears confrontation one day.

LOL! Once, there was a woman in front of me who paid with a lone star card. The cashier asked her if she wanted the receipt and the woman waved her off.

Loud enough for the general area to hear me I said:

I'LL TAKE THE RECEIPT - SINCE I'M ONE OF MANY WHO PAID FOR IT. (my memory fails, but that was close enough)

I thought the cashier wanted to crawl under the counter.
