The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

The author, Michael, of “Oh Sh!t... The Awakening” (fiction about economic meltdown), has contacted me and he's off to read my articles on Survival Podcast and get in touch with Jack Spirko, who owns Survival Podcast to get on Jack's daily radio program. He did know about Survival Podcast. Michael has written a number of other books but I haven't had time to see what kind they are.

The law of averages says you will win some books if you keep entering. And, if you write about yourself on your page so an author knows your background/interests.

I'll just keep trying for all books I have any interest in and they will stack up and I'll have books to read if the SHTF.

Can you believe how lazy? It wouldn’t take much to water the poor little plants, and pull a weed or two.

It will be a busy week in the Bender garden as we prepare it for the rains of winter. All the spent plants have been removed and put on the compost piles unless they were infected with a disease and they were dumped over the bank into the gulch. I started planting a cover crop of Common Vetch on about 20% of the fallow beds and then got side tracked with planting the Garlic sets today and got about 30% of that done before the sun went behind the trees and it got cooler so came in about 4:30. I picked the last 45 cucumbers and pulled the plants and dumped them yesterday. That brings the total to 400 plus or minus off of 4 hills. Those plants did us proud and made up for a couple of failures…

400 cukes per hill! How many plants do you have in a Hill? We don’t do very well with cukes, watermelons, or canteloupe stuff here. It’s hared to get the vines to live long enough for the fruit to be ready.

Cukes do the best.

Thanx for that info..So, you just break bits off the vine, and root them next Spring, then plant them? Correct?

I grow one on my window sill each winter . It's actually a nice looking houseplant too. In late spring I brake off the stems at the little knot like thing on the stem and root it in some peat for a week and then stick the whole thing into the ground and keep them watered till they start to root good .
My soil is like almost pure sugar sand so it helps to root them a bit first . If you have normal soil you can just break them off and stick them straight into the ground if you keep them well watered the first couple of weeks .

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I NEEDED A SECOND PERSON TO HELP ME PUT UP THE BIG NET ROOM?

Well, it's up and all veggie plants in grow bags are in the net room, plus the Giant Zinnia plants as they are still small enough a size a critter could eat them. Didn't put the Hummingbird plant and Lantana in there as they are really big now and safe to be on their own outside the net. The Sesame flowers are really tall and also safe on their own outside the net.

When I say it's up, it didn't happen fast. The covered dirt garden slants toward the front and that makes it uneven for me to balance. Wayne was afraid I would lose my balance and hit the ground. I didn't fall, but it was iffy a number of times dealing with the slanted ground and holding up the aluminum frame and working on the net at the same time. Had to move plants out of the way for a while, lots of bending and uneven ground. I had to lift it on and off the holder several times and that was the worst as it is rather heavy to deal with on uneven ground. WERE YOU THERE TO HELP? NO. :o)

Add in it would start raining and I had to go inside, rain would stop, I'd go back out in the 100% humidity and sweat some more working on the blasted net room. It just won't totally quit raining/sprinkling/light rain. So, I stayed in with rain but went back out in the sprinkling/light rain.

I was determined to get that thing up and those plants inside that net room. I didn't put water in the ring of the base of it because I had had it by the time I got it totally up. It still needs adjusting, as in some places the net is bunched together more than other places and I'll deal with that when it isn't raining. I don't think a squirrel can figure out how to lift the ring around the bottom and get in as the ring has some natural weight holding it down.

I unzipped the door to work inside the net to help get it on and that's where I can spread the net to get it even all around. I'm not through arranging the plants but at least they are in there.

I guess you'd like to visit now and sit in the net room and have a cup of coffee among the plants. The little red hen says, “NO, you didn't suffer putting it up.” :o) Actually, you can sit in there if you want. :o)

I forgot to mention, a squirrel came into the garden this morning (before the net room was up) and Prissy was out there so it decided it should leave. The freaking squirrels are NOT going away but the net room will keep them away from those plants - I’m counting on squirrel depression suicide when they can’t get in there.

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I NEEDED A SECOND PERSON TO HELP ME PUT UP THE BIG NET ROOM?

I have one of those 10 X 12 fabric patio/gazebo things on my deck. They only last a couple of years before the fabric tears, or the frame starts failing. The directions always say "two persons"..especially because it requires holding things, and snapping other things onto it while up on a ladder.

I usually drink some beer before undertaking putting it up by myself so, I won[t worry about falling off the ladder, hurting my back, etc. I hate asking someone to help me as it's so nice to have a strong helper monkey, that then I wish I had someone to help me all the time.

BTW, I have "rescued" trapped squirrels that have gotten trapped in the mosquito netting curtains on it while the squirrel was escaping from a cat.

This one is just the net that goes over an outdoor umbrella and I used the aluminum frame of the umbrella but cut away the fabric so it’s just the aluminum frame with the net over it. The aluminum frame won’t fail. The net that makes the room was $25 so I’m hoping it will last several years, then I can replace it.

The squirrel came back and I let Prissy out and he took off. I saw he is eating a leaf on the second “T” squash that is about 10 inches tall. That is in a separate plastic container and was on the deck, so I moved it off the deck into the net house. Tough cookie, squirrel, you aren’t getting that one, either, you POS!

It's a plant that works as an insecticide. It can also induce abortion and was used in the middle ages as herbal medicine and a food flavoring.

I want it for the squash vine borers.

Rats. I see now it’s unavailable.

I have a packet that has been only partially planted out.

Here’s another source. Have been happy with Shumway but since they don’t have it maybe this company will be a good place too?:

The last of our house guests just left, so came here to see what’ I’ve missed.
Our golf tournament was terrific. We had first prize, with a REDHORSE, a consolation prize, with a RED.hORSE, kneeling, and last place with the hind end held high.

Haven’t had time to transplant anything for 6 days. Now we are in a wonderful state of soft falling rain.
The fellow who usually does our ribs, had a stroke, here at the house. His son stepped in and did the ribs. They were
almost like his Dad’s. The ambulance arrived in about 15 minutes. and was code 3 to Waco. He’s been transferred to Corpus Cristi to a rehab unit. Actually he was caught in the 3 hour frame and he is doing beautifully. His therapy should have him on
the road rather quickly.

I know you wished me luck getting the “room” up. I have carrots and turnips in separate larger plastic containers on the deck. I think the squirrels are getting frantic so I’m putting net over them for tonight and moving them into the net room tomorrow.

I had taken the netting off the strawberries as they seemed okay, but I’m covering them tonight and will leave that net on from now on. I want all those strawberry containers on the deck up close to the house so I can deal with them when a freeze comes.
