Thanks Theoria and GreyFriar. At least some of them apparently tried to reach European colonies in Florida; years ago someone stumbled across another apparent inscription in Georgia somewhere (or maybe it was in one of the Carolinas).

Remote-sensing techniques have unearthed clues to the fate of settlers who mysteriously disappeared.
It's a mystery that has intrigued Americans for centuries: What happened to the lost colonists of North Carolina's Roanoke Island? (See "America's Lost Colony.")
The settlers, who arrived in 1587, disappeared in 1590, leaving behind only two clues: the words "Croatoan" carved into a fort's gatepost and "Cro" etched into a tree.
Theories about the disappearance have ranged from an annihilating disease to a violent rampage by local Native American tribes. Previous digs have turned up some information and artifacts from the original colonists but very little about what happened to them.
Until now.
Thanks to technological advances and a cover-up on a map, researchers are getting closer to finding out what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke Island.
What Do We Know?
The lost colonists were the third group of English arrivals on North Carolina’s Roanoke Island, settling near the modern-day town of Manteo.
The first group to arrive, in 1584, came to explore and map the land for future groups. A second group, which arrived in 1585, was charged with a military and scientific mission. But this second group's trip was far from peaceful.
"That's where tensions begin [with the local Native American tribes]," said Clay Swindell of the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, a member of the archaeology team investigating the colony. He says that this second group was driven out in 1586 by local tribes angry that the colonists were taking up good land and resources.

So they’re going to take an inaccurate English map of the period and “0verlay” a modern map? LOL. Good luck with that! I rather doubt that the explorers were doing an accurate survey of the coastline.
And using ground penetrating radar on a single Indian village? What if they they “get lucky” and find a period metal button? What does THAT prove? There could be a dozen explanations for how it had gotten there that don’t involve the presence of any members of the lost colony.
I think they did make for Croatan island and sadly never arrived. My guess — a sudden storm came up and they went down with all hands.
Turn your clothes inside out before you wash them and right side out after they dry.
Then the missing socks show up.
The sounds are fairly shallow and much warmer than the Atlantic. That doesn’t mean you can’t get in trouble out there because you can, but it’s a lot more forgiving than, say, Diamond Shoals. Not a good place to be in a thunderstorm. Major hurricanes have been known to empty shallower sections only to inundate them when the wind shifts. But, they were seafaring people who had crossed the North Atlantic. I suspect something else, genetic swamping. They lost hope in a ship returning and threw their lot in with the locals, and migrated inland.

That would be the Lumbee people of Robeson County NC. Visit those folks today, and you’ll see many who look like pure Caucasians, many who look like they’re about 1/8 African, and a few who look so Amerindian that you could think they just crossed the Bering Strait from Siberia.
Moreover, their Southern accents are as deep as you’ll find anywhere, and their cookin’ is pure “South country style” — something you can sample at Fuller’s Buffet just off I-95 (Exit 20) in Lumberton NC.
They went to Florida for the winter.
I think that electrical forces generated in the rotating dryer produces a portal to another area of the universe, a worm hole if you will.
The occupants of sector 5 in quadrant 205 alternate universe wonder why none of that socks that randomly appear ever match. Since they move on slime trails they aren’t all that curious!
Lumbees of today are an alphabet soup of races. The swamps and lowlands of SE NC were one of the last areas of the colonial east coast to be settled and became a haven for runaway slaves, indentured servants and criminals.
The Natives in the region during later colonial days were an amalgamated tribe, the remnants of several other small tribes from across the state that melded together in the early decades of the 1700’s as smallpox decimated and erased their prior local existence.
The Lumbee have native genetics with a seasoning of European and African flavors. There’s no way to tell how old the European strain is.
If I’m not mistaken some of the English surnames common among the Lumbee would appear to indicate a tie to the colonists.
The Readers’ Digest version is they still don’t know what happened to the colony.
The Indians probably had them over for dinner.

Most notably the Lumbee tribe claim descent from the “lost” colony on Roanoke Island, but other old triracial isolate groups have as well, on up into the Blue Ridge.

The tri-racials are commonly referred to as Melungeons. They are descendants of a mix of Anglo, Amerind and Negro. They spread over the years to various areas of the South and Mid-South. In LA, I believe they were referred to as Brass Ankles. ....There are many mentions of the Lumbees in writings about the Melungeons.
