Maine Coon kitten safety isn't usually the first thing we think about before getting a new kitten, but we should! We all know about child-proofing, but what about kitten-proofing? Your kitten can get into all sorts of trouble! Reviewing this Maine Coon Kitten safety page, and following its advice will go a long way toward keeping your kitten safe and healthy. We'll have minimal photos on this page, so you can print it out. Keep it handy and show it to other members of your household. It is amazing the places kittens will go to hide.

Thank you for the ping and post.

I was hoping to see someone who looked like my late Rocket, but no such luck.

I really miss him a lot. He was one off.

Two Maine Coon brothers once owned me.

They were with me a long time, and are now buried in my flower garden. They were great kittehs.

Brush and comb your Maine Coons daily to prevent hairballs and matted fur--they will enjoy gentle grooming!

We love our Maine Coon; the other two cats are not always so sure about him. Side-by-side he is an imposing figure; as big as a lot of small dogs.

And make sure you put away toys they can possibly swallow. This is my Mosi. She is now fully recovered after having surgery to remove a foreign object last December.

There is probably a Maine Coon in a cage somewhere near you who would loved to have a real home.

I did not know my cat was a Maine coon until a FRiend identified him once when I posted his picture here. His unknown mother dragged him into my shed where my rat hunting jack Russel discovered him. My son fed him baby formula with eyedropper for 10 days and held him in a towel practically 24 x 7. Now he is twice the size of the dog and she avoids him if possible. He is the most beautiful low maintenance cat ever. His fur never gets matted and he does not let me brush it. I think he must be a closer relative to a big cat than most domestics and could take a person down if he wanted because of his size and his powerful body. He never meows. I guess they are opposite of Siamese.

Mosi’s a beauty! What is she, about 15 lbs? You’re right about swallowing things. I’ve owned cats for many years and never had a problem with toys, but my 18 month-old female Dinah (who I suspect of Maine Coone blood — very fluffy, large-boned) recently cost me mega-$$$ for surgery to remove a cat toy she swallowed. Very tricky surgery; we nearly lost her. Today she was galloping down the hall so I guess she’s recovered! LOL!

Thanks for the pic of your beautiful girl!

I love a Maine Coone. Right now I have a rather petite male Tuxedo, "Zippy Pachoo the Wondercat" is his name. His little tuxedo pattern is PERFECT.

He was a feral out to about 6 months old. Picked him up outside my house, during a bitter freeze in Atlanta a few Decembers ago. We left dry food out and water, but the water would immediately freeze. He would complain LOUDLY, about the cold, about the water, but never let us get too close.

On the third day I just so happened to cook steaks, and we (spur of the moment) decided to try to lure him with the meat. We went outside, and he got closer and closer, and my girlfriend at that time (Angie) snatched him up.

We brought him inside and obviously he freaked. Took a few days. But even as he cowered he showed a weakness for petting.

As it turns out, the order of his priorities goes:

  1. Petting.
  2. Oxygen.
  3. Water.
  4. Food.
  5. Sleep.
Petting definitely heads the list. He has a certain meow that sounds like a teenage girl might say Mom in that sarcastice tone...."Moooo-ooooooommmmm.... " which means, PET ME NOW. He does not care how hard. How soft. Where. Just TOUCH HIM SOMEWHERE.

Because of the frozen water in his youth he also has a thing about water.
