I have a possible theory on why no one has found flight 370. Several years ago before enlisting in the NAVY, I remember talking to a A-6 Navigator about one of the pilots in his squadron crashing into the Med after losing his awareness at night. Now come word that 4 hours after losing radar contact that the engines on Flight 370 were still transmitting data to satellites, so my theory is that the flight was in fact hijacked and the transmitters turned off as the terrorists flew the jet at very low attitude until the terrorists lost their awareness and crashed into the sea at low speed, which would mean the aircraft is mostly intact and sank slowly. I believe that the aircraft is not in the Gulf of Thailand, but in fact somewhere in the Indian Ocean. As a former Aviation Boatswain Mate Handler, I saw several nuggets over the years lost their awareness at the last minute on final approach to the deck and have to take a waveoff from paddles and go back around, just a possible theory on why the plane has not been found yet.
That overlooks the cell phone issue.

Flying around for four hours, tells me they had a pretty good idea where they wanted to go..if it did crash at sea perhaps a few of the passengers did what Flight 93 did and tried to take back the plane and it crashed
I cant explain it because I don’t completely understand the technical issues involved. What I tried to get across is that all the wireless tech guru talking heads that I’ve seen on TV and read on the internet and one guru type I’ve talked to in person have told me that the idea that the families heard working phones has been debunked. As I said, I do not fully understand the technical details that they explained, but the take away was that the phones were not active. Are their conclusions true? I don’t know.

The only problem in that is the 777-200 massive wing span, you need a massively open area land one and length of a runway is not a problem as she can land with as little as 5000 feet, if I remember correctly she has the same brakes and thrust reversers as the C-17.
If in the plane was in the middle of the ocean, the of course. But by the time the families realized something was amiss an started checking the phones it could have been over land according to the most recent speculation.
If the plane never made it to land, certainly you are correct.
If the engines’ satellite pings were being done once every hour, after the 4th ping (that followed the turning off of the plane’s transponders) there would be an addition hour of flight time before the 5th pinging engaged. So the possible flight radius can be increased by another hour’s flight distance. That brings the radius out to cover Afghanistan and a significant chunk of Iran.
There are a lot of “suitable” flat areas in the Iranian desert in which an experienced pilot could land. Just because the transponders were turned off doesn’t mean all the navigation instruments and equipment wasn’t functioning. The pilots could have entered some predetermined (and previously scouted) coordinates and flew the plane there to land and meet up with confederates awaiting them. This is definitely NOT beyond the realm of possibilities.
If a hangar was constructed before this went down then that wouldn’t be a problem at ll.

The only way a cell phone system can tell if your phone is on is if it is still connecting with a tower somewhere. If your phone is on and you go out of range (or drown your phone in the ocean) the system has no idea that it has changed states. IF the phone is on and in range then the service provider would easily know where it was, or at least what tower it was connecting with.
Bottom line: The cell phones “ringing” or phone systems indicating that they are still on doesn’t mean a bloody thing.
You don’t even need a hanger as canmo does not show up well on downward looking satellite and remember during WW2, the Japanese hid a whole airfield from recon aircraft in the Pacific.
You’d be surprised what spy sats can do these days...

Let me try this one more time: The only way the phone system can know the phone has been turned off is if the phone tells the system that it is being turned off. If the phone dies or is destroyed it never tells the system it is off. So the system believes the phone is still on. After some default period of never connecting with the phone, the swystem may decide to consider the phone “off”, likely after several days of no contact with the phone.
With the same phone you could just jerk the battery out without going through the proper shutdown and the phone system thinks it’s still on? How about the phone system detecting whether there any signal coming from the phone?
I’d like to see an expert’s opinion on this before I make a decision.
