Ikea Plans 'Green' Meatballs to Help Tackle Climate Change

'Veg balls' to be launched as eco-friendly alternative to famous Swedish meatballs, which Ikea admits are damaging the planet

Ikea is developing a new 'green' version of its famous Swedish meatballs in order to cut carbon emissions and help tackle climate change, the retailer has revealed.

The flat-pack furniture giant sells an estimated 150 million meatballs, made from beef and pork, in its cafes each year.

But the popular snack is also the least environmentally-friendly item on the Ikea menu, because of high carbon dioxide emissions involved in the farming process and high methane gas emissions from cattle.

Ikea is so concerned about the contribution to global warming from the meatballs that it is now developing “vegetarian meatballs” as an eco-friendly alternative.

"We are aware of the meat issue with greenhouse gases,” Joanna Yarrow, head of sustainability for Ikea in the UK, said. “We are looking at all our food products from a sustainability perspective but specifically meatballs. They are very popular and they are also our most carbon-intensive food item on our menu.”

I hope the alternative "meatballs" don't have dwarf wheat in them.

When living in Slovakia, I discovered IKEA and found it a great place to shop for low cost furniture and household goods.
One big advantage is how the furniture is broken down into easy to carry, or ship, flat boxes.
My computer desk, which includes shelves, compartments, and keyboard tray, stands almost five feet tall and two feet deep, not including the slide-out keyboard tray, was packed in one flat box, no more then five feet x two feet.
Most of my dishes and cookware are from the same store.
I later shipped all of my IKEA goods to the Philippines, where it is all in use, including my computer desk.

IKEA is certainly a great deal for students, young start-ups, and people on the move.

My daughter had a very small room in a house with her girlfriends at college. We furnished it with Ikea furniture and it was very nice. She bought more Ikea furniture when she moved to Canada and sold it all five years later when she moved back to the states — at a small profit! Where else can you get furniture, use it for five years, and get back all your money?

Excellent. I’m glad she made out financially.

But my opinion is important because as I tell people-———

I AM THE IN-CROWD. :)

(1) Apparently Swedes have no balls. At least no good ones.

(2) How can you "admit" something when you have not the slightest idea whether it's true? How do I know they have no idea? Because they're stupid enough to believe the PC conventional wisdom. How knowledgeable could they possibly be?

Carbon Dioxide

So, we need to lower the Emissions that Plants breathe, and their exhale is what we breathe.
So lets choke the plants and ourselves to death, then nobody will ever need food again.
How perfectly healthy of you Greenholes.

This is the pure STUPIDITY and insanity of self righteous egotistical idiots.
And those who profit from the idiocy like Universities.

hunt down some male vegans and castrate them.

We do that every year in these parts. That little black dude is as vegan as they come.

I like Ikea. I have an Ikea kitchen and am currently redoing a bath with Ikea stuff. Inexpensive, stylish, and practically foolproof for the DIYer.

I completely agree.

IKEA’s products are of much better quality than anything you’ll get at Walmart.

We have two sets of their pans because they are good quality and only 20 bucks.
