Exploring his family's past for the first time, Richard Roxburgh uncovered a darker history than he anticipated- finding out his forefathers were enthusiastic supporters of the slave trade. The 52 year-old actor says he'd originally hoped the search would find his relatives 'lived good and rich lives, and contributed something.' But participating in the SBS series Who Do You Think You Are turned up a very different history.
'Thomas was the ultimate capitalist,' the actor says. 'To my mind, its about the choices that you make in this life, and he made his choice. And they wouldnt be my choices. He was a cog in the corporate machinery that presided over one of the ugliest periods in human history'

Real easy to say today. Like people who say if the lived in Germany in the 30s, they would have opposed Hitler. Guess what? 90% of them would have been right there in the crowd shouting "Sieg Heil."
Actors don't have much time to read history books.
Greed and slavery are not definitions of Capitalism.
These idiots don’t even know what capitalism is. It is the rule of law (thus ensuring contracts); it is the movement of capital from those with an excess to those with ambition and ideas; it is distribution by merit.
My response to the finding out such news would be an indifferent shrug. That was just how things were done in that time and I’m not going to judge my ancestors by today’s standards. I imagine all of us, if we went far enough back, could find things our ancestors did that wouldn’t be kosher by the standards of today....
Put his name on the list of people we send a bill to when Jesse, Al, Holder and Hussein decide that we owe reparations for slavery.
Put him on the list to take all his assets in order to pay “reparations”
He must need work. U$ performers attack 1. Bush 2. Palin 3. the GOP, if the rent is owed.
let him know they also condemned homos ... and the self loathing will be complete
They were all greedy Democrats.
Hey Dick, might I suggest a warm bathtub of water and a razor blade to ease your pain?
Maybe he could just write a big check to Jesse Jackson to assuage that White Guilt of his.
Since his gg-grandfather had sugar plantations in the Caribbean, it’s a good bet that many of his slaves were Irish as well as black.
As an act of solemn contrition then, he should commit suicide and be absolved of the sins of the father.
If Actor Richard Roxburgh is so appalled, he should go to the Sudan and fight the present day islamic slavers.
It was the in thing ,like a few years`ago people owned Pet Rocks
Richard Roxburgh: Owning slaves is bad. Forcing a man to provide according to his ability for another man according to his needs is good.
Richard, I suspect you have more in common with your ancestor than you think.
“presided over one of the ugliest periods in human history”
That time wasn’t even close to being one of the ugliest periods in history.
Good point. Liberals talking about slavery and our past sins, are not addressing that slavery still happens in some places today.
Ditto, these issues with liberal females and “war on women”. Given the treatment of women in some parts of the world, these liberals attention is best focused there, rather than bitching about birth control pills in a country in which they have full equal rights.
I’m sure his ancestors would be proud of him, too. /s
He should liquidate his assets and give them all to the reparations fund for penance, and quit his posturing.
In my genealogical research I found a Klan member in the 20s and I found 2 who were captured and enslaved by northeast indians in the 1500s.
Oh, big deal! I used Ancestry.com only to find out my great, great grandfather was a NYC copperhead who wrote cringing letters to the government to try to get out of fighting for the Union. Yes, I was hoping my great, great grandfather was an upstanding soldier who received the first medal of honor but life has a way of throwing curve balls. Get over it, Ricky!
Wouldn’t that be in the 1700s?
I have one that came over in 1640, probably as an indentured servant.
“Guess what? 90% of them would have been right there in the crowd shouting ‘Sieg Heil.’”
Just like we’re doing today with this jug eared, Marxist, punk we call President.
Late 1560s to early 1600s.
I had an ancestor who was, literally, a carpet bagger. Went down south and made his fortune and then went back to VT where he lived out his days as a gentleman farmer. In fact, I am the last family member to still own a piece of that property. I think I will give it away to make up for my shame.
He could always become informed about modern slavery in Africa and the Middle East. Then he could use his celebrity status to oppose it.
Mine were among the earliest settlers in New Hampshire.
What a sanctimonious wanker.
Bing Bing Bing........... Very first post and we have a winner!
You know, at the most basic level slavery is where one person is forced to labor for the benefit of somone else.
Nowadays we call that “taxation”.
Wait until his decendents, assuming he can have any, learn about him. Causing people to watch him on an electronic source that was largely supplied by “non-renewable energy sources”, sold little plastic discs (DVDs) also made from evil hydrocarbons, or that people watched his image preserved on celluloid, another hydrocarbon product, flew around the world in a pollution spewing plane to make and promote these evil products for his own self aggrandizement and profit.
Several decades back I visited the site of the Battle of Culloden in Scotland. A depressing place. After the defeat of the Highlanders the British government sold a lot of them into slavery in the colonies.
When I did ancestry research back in the 70s and 80s pre-internet, I discovered that my g-g-g-grandfather on my father’s side was a plantation slaveowner, but that two g-g-grandfathers on my mother’s side fought for the Union, one of whom was one of four brothers, with two each fighting on each side of the war. Over 200 years earlier, the slaveowner’s g-g-g-g-grandfather came over as an indentured servant, worked his seven years, and got his 100 acres. I am proud of my indentured servant ancestor, not proud of my slaveowning ancestor, but I am not defined by either, but by my own actions, and by my own opposition to all forms of worldly slavery.
Hey,Richie, kill yourself! Then,we’ll be square.
Perhaps your great-great-grandfather (note lack of commas) had other, better character traits.
Thats about a low as it gets throwing your family under the bus.
My guess is that just about everyone alive today probably had an ancestor who was a slave or owned a slave at some time during human being’s existence on the planet.
Just a point but I can barely impact my children’s behavior. My ancestors are somehow even less responsive.
That’s so interesting. I didn’t realize there were many Europeans here around 1560.
There weren’t a lot and few settlements survived but there were lots of attempts. In fact none of the settlements at that point made it.
St Augustine Florida is the oldest continuously populated settlement from around that time. Sault Ste. Marie Michigan wasn’t long after.
I still think the funniest one was when black comedienne Wanda Hicks (is that right name I ask myself?) - her ancestors owned slaves. lol She imagined her ancestors were slaves but found out some gr, gr whatever was a free black man who owned slaves. I thought she was going to cry right there on tv.
Of course she postured that it was just to save those slaves from being owned by someone who was mean to them so he bought them from the goodness of his heart (or some such similar bull).
You know in researching my family history, I found several that owed slaves as well. I even have a copy of a will that states the two slaves he owned, a married man and woman were to be given a place to live and taken care of.
I thought it was very interesting. You cannot run away from your ancestry good or bad.
I love it! God truly does have a sense of humor.
