Exploring his family's past for the first time, Richard Roxburgh uncovered a darker history than he anticipated- finding out his forefathers were enthusiastic supporters of the slave trade. The 52 year-old actor says he'd originally hoped the search would find his relatives 'lived good and rich lives, and contributed something.' But participating in the SBS series Who Do You Think You Are turned up a very different history.

.....................................................

'Thomas was the ultimate capitalist,' the actor says. 'To my mind, it’s about the choices that you make in this life, and he made his choice. And they wouldn’t be my choices. He was a cog in the corporate machinery that presided over one of the ugliest periods in human history'

And they wouldn’t be my choices

Real easy to say today. Like people who say if the lived in Germany in the 30s, they would have opposed Hitler. Guess what? 90% of them would have been right there in the crowd shouting "Sieg Heil."

one of the ugliest periods in human history

Actors don't have much time to read history books.

Greed and slavery are not definitions of Capitalism.

These idiots don’t even know what capitalism is. It is the rule of law (thus ensuring contracts); it is the movement of capital from those with an excess to those with ambition and ideas; it is distribution by merit.

My response to the finding out such news would be an indifferent shrug. That was just how things were done in that time and I’m not going to judge my ancestors by today’s standards. I imagine all of us, if we went far enough back, could find things our ancestors did that wouldn’t be kosher by the standards of today....

Put his name on the list of people we send a bill to when Jesse, Al, Holder and Hussein decide that we owe reparations for slavery.

Put him on the list to take all his assets in order to pay “reparations”

Hey Dick, might I suggest a warm bathtub of water and a razor blade to ease your pain?

Maybe he could just write a big check to Jesse Jackson to assuage that White Guilt of his.

Since his gg-grandfather had sugar plantations in the Caribbean, it’s a good bet that many of his slaves were Irish as well as black.

As an act of solemn contrition then, he should commit suicide and be absolved of the sins of the father.

Not defending slavery (the Bible condemns menstealers (slavers) - 1 Tim 1:10), but the alternative was that the African tribesmen who conquered their fellow tribesmen would have just killed them - rather than sold them; or have sold them to muslims who would have castrated the men captives.

If Actor Richard Roxburgh is so appalled, he should go to the Sudan and fight the present day islamic slavers.

Richard Roxburgh: Owning slaves is bad. Forcing a man to provide according to his ability for another man according to his needs is good.

Richard, I suspect you have more in common with your ancestor than you think.

“presided over one of the ugliest periods in human history”

That time wasn’t even close to being one of the ugliest periods in history.

Good point. Liberals talking about slavery and our past sins, are not addressing that slavery still happens in some places today.

Ditto, these issues with liberal females and “war on women”. Given the treatment of women in some parts of the world, these liberals attention is best focused there, rather than bitching about birth control pills in a country in which they have full equal rights.
